Maryann,
We stayed at a villa-by-owner for 3 nights and Coconut Coast for one night. I would be surprised if Gallows Point and Coconut Coast are the same price. Go to Villa by owner St. John and see if you can hook up a villa (I don't know how long you are staying)
Coconut Coast was just OK. No sandy beach. A pretty view from your terrace but a funky pond by your front door.

Hi - We're taking our first vacation in 5 years - to Westin Resort on St. John. We're stressing because we heard taxis are very expensive, but driving is difficult. Would you recommend renting a car? Would you do that in St. Thomas, or St. John? If we do it in St. John, is it $$ and difficult to get a ferry to St. John? If we rent on St. Thomas, will it be hard to take the car to St. John? Are there other transportation alternatives besides taxis and car rental (i.e. moped, bikes). Even tho we're at the Westin, we don't have tons of $$ (we got an awesome rate through my company). I know - how can a vacation be fun if I'm already so stressed about it???? Maybe this is why I haven't taken a vacation in 5 years....

Thanks for any help you can give...

Cindy

Paula, my advise is to go to Red Hook on the way to STJ as the ferrys run more often but if you want, on the way back, do the CA ferry, store your luggage at the Travelers Center and walk around STT. Now, just to let you know, that area of STT was not enjoyable for me but other members of the group liked the street atmosphere. There are a few places you may like to have lunch and sip a drink or two before heading out to the airport to go home.

Cindy,
We rented a villa last year on a hillside above the Westin. You could take a taxi into town for about $3 a person but the price was negotiable. We rented a car for the week because we wanted to visit a lot of the beaches.
If you are going to hang around the Westin most of the time and only go into
town a few times or to the beaches a few times it would probably be cheaper to take taxis. If you do rent a car, I would rent in on St John rather than St Thomas. It takes a little while to get used to driving on the left and some roads are quite hilly but we were OK after a day or 2 of driving and enjoyed the freedom having a car gave us. I think we paid about $390 for the car for a week. You'll love St. John. Nothing to get stressed about.
