Ok, in case no one picks up the other thread....Is it possible/practical to ferry from one of the more common destination islands to Provo in order to reduce the number of flights/travel timefrom the US? My husband and I don't like to fly anyway, so the less the better. So far a 2 plane deal Chicago/Ft. Lauderdale TCI is the best I've found, but would like to fly once there once back if possible.

Hi, hoosier_girl. I don't know a lot about it, but since you've not had a definitive answer on your other post, here goes. There's a LOT of open, "blue water" between Jamaica and T&C. You would have to be very seaworthy to attempt a trip and I suspect it would take at least a couple of days to do so. If you were to charter a boat, you'd have to pay the return trip for the crew and I imagine it would be prohibitively expensive.

There might be a way that you could fly directly into Nassau and then take a boat/ferry from there, but I imagine that you would have to make a few connections even that way and it would eat up a LOT of travel time.

Other folks can give you more facts, this info is just what I've picked up from doing my reading here and on other forums, plus just checking out the map to see the real distance between a place like Jamaica and the T&C. Good luck finding travel arrangements that will work for you and your husband.

Thank you. Yeah, it looks like Jamaica is a bit far; I wonder about Nassau, though. It looks close... Anybody done that--Nassau to Provo by boat?

Listen, it's really not practical to take a boat to Provo from anywhere as the distances are much too far and you'd spend far too much time travelling across "open water". It's a short flight (about an hour) on a full-size jet from Ft. Lauderdale or Miami so route yourself through one of those cities if you can't fly non-stop or direct from Chicago.

One of the great mis-conceptions is that the islands are all interlinked by ferries and that they are close together. This is simply not the case. If you look at a map you'll see, for instance that Provo is about 500 miles from Nassau. Ferries travel at about 10 to 12 miles per hour meaning that trip (if it existed) would take almost 2 days. If you went by sailboat it would take at least double that time. On top of that once you get out into the unprotected waters the ride can be quite "bumpy". Sailing across "blue water" is best left to experience ocean yacht racers and cruise ships.

No ferries to TCI.
There is a mail boat, it takes about a week.
If you fly to Bahamas, you have to use Bahamas Air, and not worth it, PLUS spend the night in Bahamas.
2 plane deal is the best you are going to do, either from Ft. Lauderdale, Atlanta, Miami, or Charlotte.
From Jamaica and Bahamas, they use those puddle jumpers, and are never on time.
