Ideas for "less expensive" 20 people all-inclusive
Do you have any thoughts for a less expensive (no Beaches, Sandals, Atlantis)Caribbean all-inclusive resort for about 20 family members with children? Sadly the inexpensive Dominican Republic is out due to someone's fear factor, and so is Margarita Island due to passport requirements. We would like beachfront and are expecting to travel in January 2002. Thank you.
There are two a/i's on St. Thomas that might fall more into your budget. Try Bolongo Bay or Wyndham Sugar Bay. I really know little about the properties except that Bolongo is a smaller older property and is still in the hands of a private owner rather than a big chain and people do seem to enjoy their stays there. Check them out - but they aren't going to be the same non-stop activity and loads of activity all the time since St. Thomas is not the kind of island where you would stay exclusively on the resort but can enjoy the rest of the island as well.

Does the "fear factor" involve local crime? If so, this should not be a factor in Punta Cana in the DR. Punta Cana is isolated in that the nearest town is at least 30 minutes away. The only locals you are going to come in contact with are Dominicans who are hotel guests and staff.
I stayed at the Barcelo Bavaro Beach Palace in December. When at the beach (every day) I left my belongings unattended when swimming. I have been to most Caribbean Islands and this was the only place where I did this.

Karen, my husband & I stayed at the Paradisus resort in Punta Cana, Dominican republic. I assure there is nothing to fear; while on the resort you are completely safe. The paradisus has a kids club & various activities for kids (I'm not sure the ages of the children are) but there would be plenty for them to do. The food was fabulous, the rooms are spacious, the staff was friendly, it truly was week in "paradise". In addition the dominican republic is a much less expensive alternative to Sandals etc, but with just as much class and activity. I'd go now before it becomes more well known and they raise the prices. Any other ?? feel free to ask.

We stayed at Sunset Beach in Montego Bay last month. All inclusive, nothing fancy. Good food and fun. Nice beach. Kids club and great disco. Everyone was having a good time. There is one buffet restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also an Italian and a Japanse al la carte, both nice..must make reservations. Very good night life. Check it out.

Thanks all for your help, be sure that I am checking each one of them out. Personally I would be happy wit the DR, but we have one family member who will not go there with his family, even though he has heard from others how wonderful it is! I'm still researching your answers, thanks again.
