Hurricane Season

When does hurricane season "officially" start? I am thinking of possibly heading somewhere in the Caribbean the first two weeks of June - I think I should be OK but want to check with you guys first!

The official season is from June 1 thru November 30. There aren't typically storms in June, so you should be fine, but that is not to say that absolutely nothing can come up. No one ever knows for certain.

The official Hurricane Season runs from June 1 through November 30. Hurricanes, however, are rare but not unheard of in June. You probably will be "safe" but when it comes to mother nature no one can give you any guarantees. Keep in mind that the Caribbean is a big place and even though there might be a storm the chances of it striking a specific island are small.

Check out the following web-sites for statistical information and probabilities of encountering a major storm on the island of your choice:

Once in a while there is a hurricane in the western Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico/Florida in June. The eastern Caribbean never has a hurricane as early as you want to go. Not even in the past two bad hurricane years. This would be from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, to the southeast thru the Leewards and Windwards.

Boy, that was a technical analysis to just wipe out half of the Caribbean as options for the month of June

According to StormCarib there have been 33 named storms in the month of June in the 56 years from 1944-99, and only 15 named storms that became Hurricane force in the 61 years from 1944-2004.

My point here is that you've probably got more chance of being knocked down crossing the road than having a Hurricane impact you anywhere on a June vacation
