Honeymoon in St. Martin
Hi!
My future husband and I will be spending our honeymoon in September 2011 in St. Martin! We are looking to book a few days on the French side of the island. (We're staying a week at the Flamingo on the Dutch side!) A place that is pretty reasonably priced, has a great beach, and is close to some fun happy hour / restaurants. Does anybody have some suggestions?
Thanks!!

Check out Bleu Emeraude; we just spent five nights there and loved it. It's a moderate beach walk or drive to Restaurant Row, but as close as you'll get in a nice place. Go to www.bleuemeraude.com.

I agree with kellybeaches. The Grand Case Beach Club is better situated for the nicest part of Grand Case Boulevard, and is a safe short walk back at night after dinner at one of the wide range of excellent restaurants on the Boulevard.
Bleau Emeraude is on the water - as is the Beach Club - but walking back along the beach in the dark at night after dinner is not really to be reccomended.
If you walk along the road, Bleu Emeraude is a fair distance from the best end of the Boulevard, and the walk is partly along the main N7 road, where there is either a very narrow sidewalk, or no sidewalk at all.
If you are looking for 'Happy Hours' they ARE operational in a few places on the Boulevard, such as Le Shore, but it is a street more noted for 'cullinary excellence'.
However there is plenty of 'Happy Hour' choice around Orient Bay and Orient Village, which is just a short cab ride away. There you will find what is, arguably, the best - and longest - beach on the island, with all sorts of water sports available, plus a wide variety of restaurants which are not overly expensive.

I don't have a suggestion on where to stay but a don't miss activity would be an afternoon on Maho beach watching the planes come in. Only place in the world where planes land and take off so close over your head. There are 2 bars and chairs to rent on the beach. If you go I promise that you will always remember it as a high point of your honeymoon.

La Plantation is a walk of about 300 hundred yards to the beach but, if you want to stay in the Orient Bay area, either The Caribbean Princess (which is a hotel not a cruise ship !)or the Esmeralda Resort are nicer, and closer. The latter also has an excellent on site restaurant, and has direct access to the beach at Orient Bay. The former is right on the beach itself. I suggest that you check the websites of both.
Watching planes land at the Sunset Beach Bar in Maho is amusing for a while - the best time is between 12 noon and 2pm when the larger planes land - but, unless you are a real airplane enthusiast, it gets rather boring after a while, though you probably won't get closer (legally) to a landig airplane anywhere else in the world !

Thank you so much for the suggestions! We will definitely look into the recommendations. One question though, do the hotels provide parking for a rental car. We wanted to rent a little jeep for our whole stay. And is parking easily accessible in Grand Case and Orient Beach?

All the hotels have parking available, and at The Grand Case Beach Club it is within a completely enclosed area. The parking in the other hotels, though plentiful - apart from at the Bleu Emeraude - is unsecured.
Parking on Grand Case Boulevard itself is not always easy, however there is a large parking lot at the entrance to the Boulevard, and from there is is an easy - and interesting - walk past the LoLos to all the best restaurants and boutiques.
Parking at Orient Bay is always available, though at times at week ends it can get a bit crowded, but it is certainly never impossible.
In any event WHEREVER you park, lock your car, and do not leave any 'tempting' items such as laptops etc. in view. Though petty theft does occur, it often happens at night, particularly in badly lit areas.
My advice is always to take 'normal precautions', and not to leave your brain at home just because you are on vacation !
