Have you been to Barbados?

My wife and I spent our honeymoon (10 days) in Barbados in April 96. We chose it because it is a large island with things to see and do other than lay on the beach. Lots of British tourists, fewer americans. The beaches are nice, the west coast is practically all coral reef, while the east coast is waves crashing on rocks. People were VERY friendly. We got lost driving around several times. Once a guy jumped in the back of our jeep and said he would show us where we needed to go. Being from LA we almost panicked but he was just being friendly and was heading our way. Another time a bus full of school kids was leading us to our destination, with all the kids pointing which way to go. (Road markings are non-existent). I wouldn't hesitate to go back, but with so many islands to see in the Caribbean, I don't know if I'll have the chance!

Hi Mary - I have 17 trips worth of experience I could tell you! The island's about 166 square miles, large enough to offer a variety of things to do, but small enough to manage on your own. The west coast beaches are beautiful and very calm - excellent for snorkeling, waterskiing, etc. and the area is quiet. The south coast beaches are also beautiful, but not as calm, having small to medium sized waves most days, and a bit more wind - excellent for windsurfing, sailing, hobie cats, etc. and the area is a bit livlier with more restaurants, shopping, nightlife, etc. The east coast is rugged and although beautiful, not the safest for swimming. The only watersport you'll see there is surfing and that's done only by the seasoned surfer. The east coast is the place to go only if you want a truly secluded hideaway kind of trip!

The locals are extremely friendly - friendliest in the Caribbean as far as I've experienced. I wouldn't say they will follow you around, but they certainly will approach you if they're selling something or if they just want to say hello. A firm "no thank you" goes far. If there is anything else you would like to know about, feel free to e-mail me directly.

We spent 10 days in Barbados last year. Very nice island to visit.

Since it was our first time, we took a tour of the island on the second day. The guide was excellent and showed us many places worth visiting (beaches, rum factory, Bridgetown, Sam Lord's Castle, fish market, island jungle, etc.)

Beaches are nice to gorgeous, people are very friendly (even when you say No to vendors) and it is fairly safe day or night.
