Grand Cayman Restaurants

I was hoping some posters could give me an updated report on some of the restaurants around the north end of Grand Cayman. I looked through the archives and they were pretty old.

We are staying near Rum Pointe and away from the crowds so I was hoping to avoid 7MB most of the time. I wanted some good restaurants in this area? We aren't opposed to going to the east end either. Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive, just good food and casual atmosphere.

We love Portofino's, which is just past the Reef Resort on the east end. We also like the Lighthouse. Both are great!

Ah... this questions is right up my street.. literally, I'm here in the Eastern Districts !

Around Rum Point there are two options :
- Kaibo. Popular...nice atmosphere, suggest go for lunch or a drink first, they also do some theme dinner events, worth asking in advance of your visit.
- Rum Point. The owners of Rum Point have taken over management. Always great mudslides, and they are hoping to re-open their evening restaurant (which has been closed for some time).

Driving along the North Coast, there is the famous Sunday BBQ at Driftwood, then the casual and relaxed Over the Edge bar and restaurant.

Take a left turn at Old Man Bay and follow the North Coast road along and you will come to :
- The Reef (my place), where we offer the Hideaway beach bar and grill and Castaways restaurant.
- Next along is Morritts resort, they also offer a bar and restaurant, but I've never eaten there, so others will have to give details.
- A couple of miles further is Portofinos. Ostensibly an Italian restaurant, but run by Indians, and the insider secret is to try their Indian food, it is great
- Local food in East End from Vivine's kitchen, and also in East End itself is Captain Herman's fish fry

Following around the South Coast, a unique experience is Roland's garden.. a must try !

Further back along the south coast (and if you are heading straight here from Rum Point you'd cut across the Frank Sound road, not drive around the island !) is the Lighthouse.

A new change on the South Coast is that the (in?)famous Durty Reid has now moved to Pedro Castle...

have not given review or details on these, leaving that for others to jump in .. but will note that ALL restaurants in the Eastern districts are right on the ocean.... something to be said for not being an over-developed area !

Thanks for the responses..that is exactly what I'm looking for. We arrive on a Saturday, so I will make sure and plan for the Sunday BBQ

On the east end...do you have large cruise crowds coming over or do they stay over on 7MB?

Also, what it the approximate drive time from Rum Point to the east side?

No cruise shippers (phew!) in the East.

Drive from Rum Point around the coast is mostly a 50mph limit (you can do 55, that is the unofficial limit!)... but for about 5 miles from Rum Point to NOrth Side it is a 30mph limit, which slows you down.

Rum Point to The Reef (NE corner of the island) is about 15 minutes, Rum Point to Lighthouse about the same.

You do need a rental car, and if you are having meals out, someone needs to be the designated driver, but if you can handle that, the Eastern districts are the place to be (IMHO!)
