Grand Bahama/Our Lucaya

I am looking into going to Grand Bahama the end of November. The hotel, Our Lucaya sounds wonderful. But I have no idea what Grand Bahama has to offer. Is it anything at all like Nassau? Are there good restaurants, some nightlife? Has anyone been to Our Lucaya that can give me a first hand description? How much and how long would a ferry ride to Nassau be? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Sherri: I was thinking of Grand Bahama too, but I don't have a clue where to stay. I'm lookin' for somewhere nice but easy on the budget.

Have gone to Grand Bahama the last several years. We have stayed at the Bahamia and Pelican Bay, across from Our Lucaya. I would not recommend Bahamia, think someone has purchased that property and is under renavation. All the good deals seem to be for this property. Pelican Bay is very small, nice rooms, across from Our Lucaya. We were told could use Our Lucaya facilities, but when got there wanted to charge us $10 per person per day!! What a joke!! Our Lucaya is beautiful, right on the beach, beautiful pools, would not stay in the Reef Village section, older and more families! Right across the street is the Marketplace with several restaurants and shopping. Grand Bahama is a much smaller scale than Nassau, we like it better. We find the locals to be so much friendlier!! We have be-friended a taxi driver and see her every year, let me know if you go, I will connect you with her. She made a lunch for us and took us way out to some beautiful beaches, she is a sweetheart! Let me know if you need any other advice. Also I would watch when you go here, we went the end of March last year and still very cold at night and questionable during the day!

Hi,

Our Lucaya is NOT like a Ritz Carleton Hotel or Hyatt Regency and NOT as luxurious as the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island so don't expect it to be like that.

Our Lucaya does have a style! It is simple, not pretentious or gaudy. In my opinion, it is the NICEST property on Grand Bahama Island and ideally located!

Our Lucaya is comprised of three separate sections, three distinct hotel section - at present, ONLY the Breaker's Cay section and Manor House (registration center) is open:

1) Reef Village, - formerly known as the Grand Bahama Beach Hotel, Radisson and Holiday Inn (open since April 1999) - 550 rooms and suites. This section has the Sugar Mill Pool and waterslide.

2) Breakers Cay (open since December 2000) - 10 story building with 579 rooms and suites (which include 81 Harbour Club rooms on the upper two floors that share a concierge room that has food & beverages two times a day). This section has the Serpentine pool.

3) Lighthouse Point (open since December 2000) - 221 rooms and suites. This section has the Infinity crescent shaped pool and the Lap pool.

A new casino is currently under construction (probably won't be completed until April or perhaps even summer of 2002).

Our Lucaya is situated on 7.5 acres of beach. Watersports activities on the beachfront include parasailing, banana boat rides, jet skis, sunfish, and kayaks.

The pools are diverse and lovely. Chairs and set-up space are replete and efficiently maintained by the staff.

Our Lucaya is conveniently located across the road from Port Lucaya Marketplace and Marina, the area's biggest attraction. Port Lucaya Marketplace has shops, bars, restaurants and a good sized straw market all in a waterfront setting. The marina front center gazebo bandstand, also known as Count Basie Square, is the scene of live music most evenings.

There are several reasonably priced restaurants located at Port Lucaya Marketplace, just across the street from the property.

There are taxis at the parking lot of Port Lucaya Marketplace.

A public bus stop is close by for guests staying at Our Lucaya. You can take the bus to the International Bazaar area where the main straw market, shops, restaurants, bars, the Casino at Bahamia and the two sister hotels that make up the Resort at Bahamia are located.

For guests staying at Our Lucaya, there is currently a bus stop just a bit past the Reef Village section, right near the police station. There is also beach access for non-guests who want to use the beach.

There is another bus stop nearby as well; you just have to cross the road, walk past the Redwood Inn, and continue a bit for about a five minute walk past the bend, continue around the bend for another two minutes.

Buses run from 7 am to 7 pm. The cost is $1.00 per ride. You must have the exact change or a $1.00 bill!!

Feel free to email me directly if you need more detailed info. on Our Lucaya. I stayed there July-August 2001.

I can also provide you with info. on Grand Bahama Island regarding restaurants (some with menus), activities, nightlife, etc.

best regards

Carrie
[email protected]

We visited Our Lucaya for New Year eve. WE went with a large group of friends all in our mid-20s. Unfortunately the weather was really bad, really cold and not beach weather at all. This is something you should take into account, given that Grand Bahama is not that far from Florida, and is not that far South, so hot weather cannot be guranteed after mid-November. The resort was okay, looks like it has recently changed ownership and trying to work on a new image. Facilities are quite good, nice beaches, big pool area and lots of water sports etc. However there are two parts to the resort, make sure you ask for a room in the new wing. There is a big difference between the two wings. There is a pretty fun bar, with pool table and pretty good nightlife at the resort itself. Right across the street are quite a few bars and restaurants. In general I think it is a pretty good place, especially if you are in a group or have kids. However if you are looking for a quiet upscale retreat, you should probably choose somewhere else.
