PR North Central

Staying a couple of days in the north central area, near karst country. Recommendations among the many options-the observatory, lakes, forests, caves? Have folks had good experiences at the caves? I've heard it's not always open when it says it is .

Glenn-
Caves are great for exploration, They are the world's third largest underground river cave system also you must call 1-787-898-3100 to confirm their timetable and availability for the tours. The Arecibo observatory is also a must to visit but as the Camuy caves you must call for their time table

Glenn,

The number to call for the Arecibo Observatory is 1-787-878-2612.The observatory has the world's largest radio telescope which is operated by Cornell University.

Karst Country is the caves area. I think the area where the limestones are. I believe it also covers the Jayuya mountain areas. I have been to Karst country, it's a very pretty drive you will hurt your neck from sightseeing. It is also a dangerous drive, meaning, the roads are super narrow and they wind like Ss'. And it goes on for hours! I suggest do not drive alone. Have a driver to concentrate on driving only, and the passenger to do the photographing and sightseeing. The Camuy caves are beautiful. The trick is to get there early. One time we went we got there at 11am and could not get in. They closed it because they reached the quota of visitors for the day. I guess because it is a park reserve, they have regulations from the US government in terms of how many people are allowed to visit the caves in order to preserve its beauty. The second time we went, we left San Juan at 6:30am and got to the caves around 8:30 am. They open at 9am and it was perfect timing. Only 10 people waiting to get in. Nevertheless, we got in. Good luck --- it's a beautiful drive, make sure to rent a car!

Rob,

To reach the Karst area from highway 22 from San Juan, turn off on Highway 10 South this connects Arecibo with Utuado. Before long you're making your way through the gigantic cone-shaped hils of the Karst Area ( Limestone Hills) Puerto Rico has some of the best examples of tropical Karst in the World. From the Rio Abajo Forest to the Dos Bocas Lake through the Rio Camuy Park to Lake Guajataca you will see Karst. Check it out!!
