First time to Puerto Rico

My husband and will be going to Puerto Rico the end of April beginning of May. We want to experience the culture, the food, the beaches and are somewhat adventurous. We enjoy hiking, kayaking and exploring.

My tentative itinerary is to stay three nights in Old San Juan and then go to Vieques for five nights. Im wondering if Vieques will be too sleepy for us and if we will be missing a lot on the mainland. Also, I'm vegetarian and wonder if I will do okay with the food. Thanks for any help.

You can use Old San Juan as a base to take a day trip to El Yunque, which I highly recommend. Get there as early as you can to avoid the crowds. We've stayed in San Juan in both the Isla Verde and Condado neighborhoods on the beach and commuted in to OSJ very easily on the bus and taxi. Never been to Vieques but sounds great for beach and kayak.

We love the beach so we don't stay in Old San Juan. We usually stay is Isla Verde and visit Old San Juan if we want to. If you like to hike definitely go to El Yunque.

You could check out a night time kayak trip in the bio bay. There is one on the mainland, and supposedly a better on Vieques. You will need to check out the moon cycle for the best time to visit. The first time we went off the mainland, it was amazing. Glowing water everywhere you splashed - even glowing water running down my oar and pooling in the kayak. So cool! The second time, not so much, but it was still a good time. With the trip on the mainland, you kayak about a mile through the mangroves out to the lake, and it is completely dark - you can only see the glow ring on the end of your kayak. Definitely something different to try.

Never been to Vieques so can't comment. I usually stay in Isla Verde and/or Condado. I did stay in Old San Juan for two nights a couple of years ago (and then a week in Isla Verde). Stayed at El Convento. It was an interesting change of pace. Not sure I'd extend the stay to 3 nights. Old San Juan is pretty compact and easy to see in two days. Plus, it gets soooo hot walking around the town in the day.
