Ferries
We are getting ready for our trip to Tortola. We fly into St. Thomas and we were going to take a taxi to RedHook and then a ferry to Tortola and another taxi to Ft. Recovery. Moneywise, what is the difference if we would take a taxi to downtown St. Thomas and then ferry to Tortola? Also, do you negotiate cab fares? Do you tip the cab drivers? I have heard conflicting stories. Thank you for your help. Lyn

It would be cheaper to taxi to the ferry from the airport in Charlotte Amalie (downtown) than Red Hook, but I'm not sure what the ferry cost is.
Taxi fees are regulated, there is no negotiating. Tips are not necessary but most people do tip. I personally think it would be rude not to tip.

Taxi and ferry fares and schedules are on www.caribbean-on-line or www.vinow.com but good to confirm schedule for your date (the ferrys companies do rotate the schedule). Ferry fares would depend if you go to West End or RoadTown and where you depart from. Taxi to waterfront from airport is around $4 and $9 to Red Hook when traveling with more than one in your party. Taxi fares are set per person per destination and non-negotiable. Some charge the extra fee for extra bags, soem don't. Tipping is individual preference but if fare quoted is above set fare, consider it included.
