eighty+ travelers thinking of St. John

We are two women in the mid-eighties--intrepid but not too much so. We want to go to St. John in June for a week. Swimming, snorkeling, bird-watching & reading. Advice, please: Where to stay, what to avoid ? Car rental needed? Etc.

if you can manage caneel bay resort you'll be all set.has good food & 7 beaches for snorkeling & swimming. no car necessary.
http://www.caneelbay.com/default.html

if not you might enjoy secret harbour on st. thomas
http://www.secretharbourvi.com/ all the units are condo style. snorkeling off their beach is quite good. has a nice restaurant and fun little beach bar where you can get sandwiches or snacks. be sure you're in one of the beachfront buildings as the walk up the hill to the others can be a bit much in the heat.

to go anywhere from either resort would require a rental car or taxi.

Plus know you don't fly into St. John directly. You go to St. Thomas then take the ferry over to St. John.

Our friends (in their 70's - 80's ) own a place on St John.
One bedroom, walkable to Cruz Bay , nice pool , view etc.
www.condocruzbay.com Let me know if you want more info. They
have been there all winter, just left two days ago back to their hometown.

First of all, I want to be you when I am 80+... very cool that you are doing this trip and I am sure you will love it.

I agree about Caneel if that fits your budget - it meets all of your requirements and is just beautiful. I would also suggest a look at Little Dix Bay and Peter Island in the BVIs if the cost works. All are expensive.

St. John requires a lot of moving about. It is beautiful and worth it, but it is not always easy. The nice beaches are on the "other" side of the island and the driving is not for the faint of heart. Yes, there are taxis and they are reliable and reasonable.

On St. John, in addition to what has already been mentioned, look at Gallows Point and Grande Bay. Neither is on a swimmable beach, but both are very nice and well located.

Another idea is Secret Harbour on St. Thomas. Good snorkeling right from shore and a fairly self-contained resort. Also easy access to ferry to St. John for a day trip or two.

Please let us know what you decide. We want to live vicariously!
