Dominican Republic
A group of friends and I are trying to decide where to spend a weeks vacation in Nov. Has anyone been to the Dominican Republic? There always seems to be great deals to be had here. Where is a great location, beautiful beaches, party atmosphere? Any info good or bad will be greatly appreciated.

here is the comprehensive site about the D.R.. The beaches at La Romana and Punta Cana are gorgeous and the city of Santo Domingo is exciting, but no beaches..

We visited the DR last April. We stayed at the Gran Ventana in Puerto Plata. Had a terrible time. We did travel through the island and would definetly recommend Punta Cana or Boca Chica. But be advised-if you are looking for a luxury type of vacation, you are not going to find it in the DR. The food is very basic and bland, the beaches in the Puerto Plata area are awful and the staff at the Gran Ventana was equally awaful. I could go on and on about that resort. The deals are for a reason-in this case it is 100% true that you get what you pay for. If you keep that in mind you can have a decent time there. The tourism/hospitality industry in the DR still have a lot to learn.

amsha paradise beach resort and casino in puerto plata is a fabulous resort. We are going nov 25, we were there six years ago. We got a great deal we live in ontario canada. This place is all inclusive and I can't say a bad thing about it. Reviews on the message boards all over the net also say how great it is.

We did Puerto Plata 4 years ago. We can not complain about what we got for the money. The problem was that the water was not good for snorkeling and the food was very basic. If we went again we would go to the Carribean side of the DR which we have heard good thing s about.
Do you have cheap air fare to Cancun? If so, consider Isla Mujeres a small , laid back, inexpensive island
about 10 miles from Cancun. We have a home grown brouchure on the Island which we send to interested parties on request. Dan and Ginny
PS we are there with our kids for two weeks starting 11/17

I am with the others. We were there 2 years ago and it was our least enjoyable holiday to date.
The beach was lovely. But the diving poor no matter how far we traveled. Night life was too low key and winded up early. Food was ok but just barely. We were in Punta Cana but did travel across island to a promised "great diving" location. Go to Cozumel or Isla Mujeres as above. You will pay about the same and have a fabulous time in either location. peace rita
