Destination with more than just sun and beaches?

Hi there,

We're trying to find a sun destination for 5 days in August for our 10th anniversary. We will have our children with us who are 4 years and an infant.

We're looking for somewhere that has more than just lounging on the beach. It's not necessary to have a kids club but if there is one for our 4 year old that is a bonus.

We really enjoy going to Atlantis in the Bahamas as there is something for all of us. It was nice that other than the beach they had the kids pool and play area for my son but also we can just enjoy walking around the facilities, watch the different feedings, and walking around the harbour or that little marina shopping area.

Is there anywhere else that has such a large variety of things to do that are so close to the hotel?

Thanks for your suggestions!

I doubt you'll find anyplace that has a program of facilities for your "infant" other than perhaps baby sitting service.

As for yor 4 YO, you might want to check out Four Seasons, Nevis. They have an excellent children's program that will be perferct for your 4 YO.

Also look at Beaches on Provedenciales (Turks & Caicos). This family oriented resort consistantly get high makes from familes with young children.

Thanks for your reply RoamsAround! I'll look into your suggestions.

We're actually not looking for a place with a kids club for our baby as she'll stay with us. If there is one for my 4 year old that's great but not necessary.

We want more of a place with a lot of things to do either on the resort or nearby. Not just water sports and beaches. We really like the variety at Atlantis and how close things are to the hotel to enjoy without having to take a taxi. We'd like to try somewhere different though.

Thanks!

Atlantis is a bit unique in that it's pretty much a self-contained resort and its close location to other activities.

What you have to realize is most visitors to the Caribbean are adults and fall into two basic categories; they either want 1) a lot of daytime activities like water sports and an active nightlife or 2) seclusion, which by definition means nothing nearby. It is precisely these reasons why most resorts in the Caribbean don't have a lot of "off-resort" activities within walking distance so be prepared to take a few taxis or hire a rental car if you truly want to "experience" all an island has to offer.

That doesn't mean you can't find a family oriented resort but rather there aren't many like Atlantis. The two I mentioned in the earlier post have great children's programs but there's not too much else to do and see within walking distance of either resort.

Thanks RoamsAround. You're so right. We use to be one of those couples that visited the different islands when we were "DINKS"...double income no kids! It's such a different type of vacationing now with kids, especially with the little one but I'm hoping to find something with a bit of everything we can enjoy since it's our 10th anniversary.

Will let you know what we decide!
