Culebra Island, PR
Have heard bad stories about flying to Culebra, i.e.; plane never leaves on time to or from Culebra (difficult to schedule subsequent flight from San Juan airport?), hard to get transportation once on Culebra. Any of this true?

Also anyone familiar with Tamarindo Estates Beach Resort or Isla Bonita Hotel on Culebra? Where have you stayed/would you recommend? Have also heard stories about lots of bugs in some hotel rooms. Should we take our 2 & 4 1/2 year olds to Culebra or stay on PR? Thanks for any answers to my lengthy post!!

I highly recommend the Tamarindo Estates over Isla Bonita. It's very safe for children and always buy "OFF", a repellent, if children are traveling to the tropics. It really protects them from any mosquito bites. This is not a big problem in Culebra. As to the flights, they are not as punctual as they should be, but since P.R. is so close if you give yourself extra time, this should not be a problem at all. The children will love a trip to Culebrita a little off-shore island and the Baths where they can swim and play.

I also would recommend Tamarindo Estates. Its been a few years since we stayed there, and I know they had some hurricane damage, but I understand it has been all cleaned up, and the property has been improved. Another place you might consider is Club Seaborne. Both properties have web sites. Flying into an out of Culebra is an adventure, but that is a small price to pay to be able to stay at such a jewel on an island. You will need bug spray, but that is true almost anywhere in the Caibbean. You will also want to rent a jeep. There are many beautiful beaches on Culebra, but you need a jeep to get to them. As much as I love Culebra, I'm not sure I'd want to be there with two very small children. Its a small, quiet, laid back island, with not much of anything to do other than relax. There isn't much in the way of diversons.

If you're interested, there are ferries from Fajardo to Culebra that were pretty reliable in my opinion. Many of the locals pack picnics and ferry to Culebra for the day. Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with their schedules anymore. There was even a whale sighting from the ferry I was on...
