Joanne, three major US airlines offer service to the Abacos from Florida -- American, USAir, and Continental/Gulfstream. I have flown American via Miami and USAir via West Palm (both times to Marsh Harbour) and found them safe and reliable. There are a number of smaller carriers which cover these routes as well, though I have no experience of them. Go to www.abacoboard.com and post your query on the message board there (do a search of the archives first) -- you will recieve a wealth of replies.

Joanne, I have not checked but recently I heard that American is only flying into Nassau now, and has stopped flying into Eleuthera and Abaco.

You might want to consider flying into Nassau and taking Bahamas Air to Abaco.

The smaller airports are not secure and I understand with the recent "restrictions" the only airport that can be an international airport is Nassau.

Have a great time, and enjoy the Bahamas.

tweedy

As I understand it, Air Sunshine is a good, reliable airline out of Ft. Lauderdale. There is a 40 lb. weight limit. Have never flown with them personally but will be in May/June, 2002. We are flying U.S. Air from Atlanta to Ft. Lauderdale. Hopefully, they will not change the flight times too drastically between now and May/June. Also, heard good things about Vintage out of Daytona. I agree with Eva, check out http://abacoboard.com

Eva, was hoping to meet you some day in Abaco. We are leaving June 8 (the day you are arriving). We are taking the 11:00 ferry from Guana to Marsh Harbour. Maybe we will pass each other in the airport.

I just called American Airlines to ask what the new proceedures will be to the Abacos and Eleuthera and this is what I was told.

"Checking the current flights we are still flying in March Harbour but have stopped flying into Govenours Harbour, Eleuthera. Still flying into Nassau, Georgetown, Exuma."

Hopefully the Bahamian Government will continue to support the open airports and provide enough security so that American will still fly into Abaco and Exuma.
