Barbara,
We were in Playa Del Carmen last spring. We did not take the Chichen Itza tour, but did talk to several people who had. It is a full day trip, by bus from the main land it is about 5 hours, by plane I think they said it was a little more than an hour. If you have a fear of flying and do not like very small planes, then this is not the route to go. The planes may seem unsafe since they are very small and antique looking, but we have never heard of anything bad about the trip. The cost was $119 US by plane or $67 by bus.
Have a great trip. I personally can't wait to go back to this area since it is really beautiful.

I flew from Cancun about 10 years ago...the flight was fine and the ruins made my trip! They are a once in a lifetime experience! The flight meant you didn't arrive in the heat of the day with the hordes of tourists who visit and I was back at my hotel for a late lunch - wonderful.

I too would encourage you to go. I went 10 years ago from a cruise ship stop in Cozumel. We didn't have a flight option, just a bus, but it still was one of the most memorable excursions I have ever taken. Chichen Itza is one of the better cleared ruins, there is a lot of walking, and I understand that you can no longer climb the Warrior Temple (Temple of Chacmool) but you can climb the famous pyramid called The Castle. It's a steep climb but the view is well worth it. You will learn a lot about Maya culture on this trip, and these ruins are in better shape than many others. I keep hoping for a return trip when I can spend more than a day there.

We flew from Cozumel to Chichen Itza - It was well worth the money! Utterly spectacular.
The planes are a little antiquated, but we felt perfectly safe, about 20 people in it. Pilot flew with his window open.
BRING LOTS OF WATER!! We went through four liters between the two of us. I would really recommend taking the morning trip. By the time we were leaving the crowds were building (all the buses of people from cancun)and it was very hot. By going in the morning we were leaving when the sun was hitting its hottest.
Warning about the fee - the $119 price does NOT include the airport taxes on both end which are hefty, 10 or 20 dollars (total) be sure and ask the person you book with what the taxes are.
