car rental - grand cayman
Hi everyone, I have some questions about a car rental. We're staying at the Grand Cayman beach suites and arriving on Sunday, November 28th. We want to do the kayak bio-bay tour on Wednesday the 1st (we were told that would be the best night). In order to get to Rum Point (for the kayak departure) I think we need a car. The employees at the kayak place gave us a price of $300 kyd for a limo and they said a taxi would be too expensive. I don't want to rent a car from the airport on the day of arrival because chances are we won't do much but relax on Sunday and I don't want to pay for a day that I won't use. If we rent from the location on 7 mile beach on Monday or Tuesday, how far is the beach suites from the pick up/drop off location? Would it just be easier to rent from the airport (but then we'd have to return it to 7 mile beach anyway because we don't plan on having a car for our entire stay). Thanks!

def use the 7 mile location. no reason at all to go back into the airport unless you decide to keep your car until your last day. don't know how far from beach suites to car rental.
it will take you the better part of an hour to drive from 7 mile to rum point. on the way you will pass the botanical gardens. if you have time it's worth it (takes a couple hours to wander through their beautiful plantings -- and see the blue iguanas and the cayman green parrots)
rum point beach food is good but beware the oh so strong beach cocktails - the rum point sunset is especially rummy.

The nighttime tour of the Bio-luminescent cove beats the daytime mangrove tour IMO. As Virginia stated, no sense in going to the Airport, just use one of the walkable offices on SMB (Avis/Cico or Andy's) to rent the car.
The restaurant at Rum Point should be open by Thanksgiving in the States, so depending on the time of your tour, you may want to consider dinner there either before or after the tour. You could also eat down the road at Kaibo, Over the Edge or the Lighthouse.
If still light out when you get there, also consider visiting Starfish Beach. I understand it is a little harder to get to now (must take a shot walk along the beach vs. driving right up) but usually a nice spot to see starfish, especially nice to watch the sunset.

The new owner(s) of Ivory Kai (the peninsula which Starfish Beach is on) have placed a gate at the archway entrance with a "not open to the public" sign. So now you have to park off to the lot on the left and walk down the beach to the point.

Could have been your little piece of paradise for around $12 million US! I have not checked the land registry as to the actually purchaser, but the initial rumor was that a well known developer/benefactor/container company heir bought it. Hope was it would become a park like one on South Sound. But based on the new lettering I saw on the now spruced up entrance way wall, it may be once again slated for condos or homes.
Remember, all beaches in Cayman are public. So as long as you can get to the beach, you can still get to the point and the resident starfish.
