Car hire in Cuba

Car hire in Cuba
We are just trying to book a car for 9 days in December. Pick up Holguín. Drop off Havana. We can’t find availability on any website. Perhaps this is to do with booking so far ahead?
Any suggestions on how to hire a car. It seems that whoever you try to book with, you get routed to CubaTravelNetwork.
Having read a lot of adverse experiences of car hire car in Cuba, we would just like to check that it is safe/sensible. We are broadly travelling around the area of Holguín, Santiago de Cuba, Bayamo, Camagüey, Trinidad, Cienfuegos, Havana. We have looked at getting buses, but it does seem like a bit of hassle, although a lot cheaper. We have 12 days in total.
Advice would be much appreciated. Thanks
