Cap Juluca was Wonderful

I just came bak from a week at Cap Juluca - I wanted to write my opinion of the resort, since this board is where I found out about it. We are stressed out financial professionals in NYC and found Cap Juluca to be the perfect place to rejuvinate. It is a quiet, luxury resort where you will be pampered. Do not go there if you are looking for: an active night life, a singles scene, a place to bring children, or a cheap vacation. This vacation was pricey, but I feel as though it was worth every penny. I am 29, boyfriend is 35 - I'd say the average age there was about 40-45. Cap Juluca had the most gorgeous beach, clear water, attentive service, great rooms, great food, friendly people - it felt like we were on our own little island with our own butler! we fell asleep to the sound of the ocean, we ate breakfast on our terrace overlooking the beach/ocean (steps to the beach), we were brought sorbet on the beach at 3:30, we were given wet towels to cool down under our umbrella, we received massages in our room (listening to the sound of the waves). What else can I say? It was so wonderful that I am afraid that no other vacation will be comparable. I was happy from the minute I arrived, until the minute I left - and that is what made my vacation so wonderful.
Tamar, Glad to hear you had a wonderful trip. Was this your first visit to Anguilla?

I live in NYC as well and will be traveling to Cap next year. (for Honeymoon)
I wanted to ask you a few questions:

1 - Assuming you flew from JFK, did you go through SJU or fly direct to SXM?

2 - Did you get a package from Cap? Did you feel is was worth it?

3 - What room category did you get? Where you on the east or west end?

4 - How as the food?

Thanks so much for the info. Feel free to be as detailed as possible.

Tamar: Yes, Cap is wonderful, we got hooked after going this past summer and are returning next year. Glad to hear you had a great time.

To Beach Baby: I can answer some of your questions.

2. We did the Romantic Rendezvous package. You can check it out on their website www.capjuluca.com. We were there for 12 days so we definitely thought the package was worth it.

3. We were in a Jr. Suite at the west end. Villa 11-4. The villas are number 1-19 with 6 rooms in each villa. There has been much talk about the jr. suites vs. the luxury rooms and whether or not the luxury rooms have the incredible bathrooms. The only thing I know for sure is that the Jr. Suites are larger than the luxury rooms and most all of the Jr. Suites have the solarium next to the bathroom. If you choose a Jr. Suite and love the lapping of the water to lull you to sleep request villas 11 or 12. Cap will not guarantee, but you can request it.

4. The food at Cap is incredible as well as all the restaurants on the island. It's the best we have ever had.

I would add that if you are going for a week I would probably not get the Romantic Rendezvous. 8 days equals 7 dinners and 4 would have to be eaten at Cap. While the food is incredible at Cap you will want to experience some of the other restaurants on the islands. Although it is a matter of preference.

There are also mixed reviews about flying into SJU or SXM. We flew from Philly to SJU and then to Anguilla...it was not a problem going, but coming back we almost missed our flight in SJU because of leaving late from Anguilla. I've also read recently that AA may be overbooking flights from SJU to Anguilla or having a weight problem and asking people to give up their seats and take the next flight, which may not be until the next day. It doesn't happen often, but it could. The other side of the coin is that customs and immigration in SXM is a zoo, but at least you are only a ferry ride away from Anguilla once you get to SXM. Next year we are going to try SXM since we can fly directly there. It's a toss of a coin.

There is a very active forum on Anguilla at www.caribbean-on-line.com. You will not be disappointed in Anguilla. Congratulations and good luck!

Thanks Nancy,

Actually I don't mind the 4 dinners at Cap because I am a very picky eater so, I am not the one to "explore" with food.
I don't eat lobster, crab, shrimp, etc. so dinning around Anguilla doesn't really appeal to me.

- What month in the Summer did you go?
- Did you get a chance to look at a Luxury room?
- Did you enjoy the Couples massage and the snorkeling trip?
- Did you use the car for just one day or did you rent for more than one?

Thanks.

Even though you don't want to try the other restaurants they are not all about seafood. One of the restaurants at Cap is called Kemia and if you are a picky eater I don't think you will like the food there. You should check out their menus on the website to be sure.

We were there from July 3 to the 14th. The massage in the villa was wonderful and definitely worth it. My husband had a gentlemen's facial instead of the massage when I had my massage. I also had a facial on another day, if you do, ask for Paula....she was phenomenal! It was the best facial that I ever had.

The snorkeling trip was a lot of fun, however, there were no fish and we joked about the fish shopping in St. Martin that day! We still had fun! There were 6 couples including us, all of them on their honeymoon, so we felt like mon and pop, which was a kick for us. We are in our 40's/50's, but very young at heart! We had a wonderful lunch at Prickly Pear and the water at Little Bay was just so soothing.

We didn't get to see any luxury rooms, but I am sure that all the rooms are wonderful. 3 of the couples that we met on the snorkeling trip all had booked luxury rooms and were upgraded to jr. suites. That happens more in the low season during the summer.

We rented a jeep for 8 of the 12 days and used it everyday. We only paid for 7 since one day was included in the package and Cap paid for that. I would suggest renting a care for longer than a day, since you will want visit the other beaches, especially Shoal Bay East. For lunch, if you don't want to stay at the resort, you can drive to E's Oven or Tasty's, both have incredible food, chicken is awesome at E's Oven and I would swim from St. Martin for Tasty's home fries and pumpkin soup! Also, we never made it, but have heard wonderful things about Tratorria Tremonte for lunch which is about 5 minutes from Cap on a beautiful beach.

Hope all this helps!

We did the all day snorkeling trip. First you go to Prickly Pear to snorkel or just lay on the beach if you choose. Lunch there was very very good. Then we went to Little Bay. We just hung out in the water since there was really no fish to see. It was very relaxing. Also, rum punches on the way back. What's nice about it is that there were 2 boats with 6 couples on each, only 24 people. I don't prefer those snorkel trips with 50+ people, it just gets too crowded. While at Prickly Pear another tour was there from St. Martin, which only had 10 couples, which wasn't too bad. So to answer your question, all you do is swim, eat and snorkel.

To Linda: There was hardly any fish to see, thus my joking that they were in St. Martin shoppping.

Anguilla is not one of the best islands for snorkeling but the other attractions more than make up for it.
Of course you can email the fish on any island for reservations to ensure that they will be around the days that you want to snorkel.

Thanks alot Nancy. You are so patient in with your responses.

One more question - Did you prefer the west end over the east end, and did you have a balcony? (ok 2 more)

Ok. that's it (I think) Thanks.
This is for my honeymoon, so that is why I am so...(fanatic)

Beach Baby:

We preferred the west end. The beach is narrower than the east end, but you can hear the sound of the water lapping against the shore and have better view of St. Martin All rooms have a balcony or patio. Balconies on top, patio's on bottom with direct access to the beach. We prefer the top since the views are better and it's ony about 10 steps to the beach instead of 4!

Ask as many questions as you like..that's what the forums are for! I am also hooked on Anguilla!

if you do wind up in the middle room in some of the villas on the second floor with the wonderful private sunning deck (#5), you don't have direct access to the beach but go out the "back," down the steps and it's a few more paces than 10.

I have a question for all the people that know Cap Juluca and the rooms. We booked our trip 7 months in advance and paid for a Jr. Suite. When we were brought to our room we were put in villa 12-2. The room was smaller and had a small shower and a tub for 1 with a window. I was disappointed because I knew what the Jr. Suites looked like from the pictures on travel hop and the CJ website. I said we paid for a Jr. Suite this cant be, he said yes this is a Jr. Suite and left. Anyway, after a phone call we were moved to a real Jr suite 12-1 with double tub/outdoor shower/solarium. The room was much bigger too and we were very happy since this is what we paid the extra $$ for. My question is 12-2 a jr. suite or did he make a mistake? It was our first time to CJ, and I was very happy to have known what the different rooms look like via the internet Just curious if a mistake was made

Curious-Yes 12-2 is a junior suite. Not one of the ones I would want, had 3-2 the same middle room lay out! No mistake!

Penny: In the Jr. Suite Villas 1-3 and 11 and 12 is room #2 the same in all the villas? On Cap's website it states that "most" jr. suites have an outside solarium. I wonder if they are referring to that room.

Thanks Penny, you are definately the CJ Maven.....That room was definately not worth the extra$$$. I'm so glad that I knew and said something. I was looking at those pictures on travel hop for months Good to know, when we return next year I am going to request the same room 12-1 which was BEAUTIFUL!!!! Or at least request not to have a Jr Suite middle room!

The middle room is pretty much the same in the junior suite villas. In some of the villas not 1-3, 11-12, its a superior room, or part of the patio suite. This room in the lower catagory does not have a window, just enclosed marble bathroom.
On our last vist I noticed a couple getting a tour, they were shown villa 2-2. The shutters doors were not even opened!
Anyhow when I book I usually ask for a lower floor end room, this works. I never care or ask for the exact same room.
Snorkeling on Maundays Bay in not good at all. Some fish over by the rocks at Pimms. Have tried Cove Bay next door, but not this trip or the last. Once you snorkel from the beach in ST. John USVI, it is not the same so I just skip it!
