Caneel Bay-Which beach for a room?
Hi:
Thinking about going to Caneel Bay for next spring break. Got a map of the resort that shows where the rooms are located. We are looking for a beachfront room (2 that connect for our kids). I see the BF rooms are on Hawksnest, Turtle bay and Cannel bay beaches. Any suggestions for which of these beaches would be the nicest? I was on Caneel Bay beach a few years ago and it seemed crowded w/daytrippers who use the restaurant. How is Hawksnest or Turtle Bay? Is the water calm? Good snorkling? Beach lounges? Wide beach? Any info would be greatly appreciated! By the way--got their rates for 2003 and they went up again!

Mary;

Depending on how old your kids are, Caneel will sometimes only place you on certain beaches. (all are great really)
A couple of the beaches are considered
"adults only". That said they are somewhat lax about that policy somtimes.
If your kids are younger, I'd suggest staying right at Caneel Beach. This seems to be where most of the families stay and thus your children would be more likely to find others to play with.
For better or worse, the main breakfast and luncheon restaurant is located here also. Otherwise there can be long walks or long waits for the tram to get from other room areas to the Caneel Beach.
You really cant go wrong at any beach however as they are all beautiful.

Have fun!!

No question Caneel Bay (the main beach) is the best of many great beaches. It is an absolutely fablous beach for kids. It is extremely calm, very shollow slope, with no reefs, rocks or seagrass. I believe it's the 3rd best beach on the island slightly behind Trunk Bay, and Cinnimon Bay. Note: The fact that people on the beach, shouldn't take away for it's beauty.

Scotts Bay is lovely with a rocky reef to the right. Turtle Bay and Hawksnest are lovely and quiet - just not as perfect as Caneel Bay.
