Also, what were your flights like, we're looking right now at about $550 pp from Chicago on American (anyone know of any better deals??)Any websites with good photos out there?

Dear Jane: I should be working but here I am reading web sites about travel. Anyway, we live in the Virgin Islands -- on St. Thomas -- and we were just at the Buccaneer last month. It's a lovely resort, probably the nicest on St. Croix, with pretty rooms and fine views of the ocean. In September, weather will be warm but so will the ocean, so swimming & snorkeling will be ideal (Virgin Islanders don't even go in the sea in the "winter" when tourists think the weather is best, because we find it too chilly.) There are great boat rides out to a tiny place called Buck Island which is an underwater national park. The only catch is that is hurricane season, so you will want to watch weather reports as your departure date nears. As long as your luck holds on that, you should have a wonderful time.

Hi Jane,
My husband and I spent 7 nights at the Buccaneer in May. We loved it, and want to go back and explore more of the island this time, we didn't leave the resort much! Buck island trip is a must, although a half day is probably enough.
Email with specific questions and I'll be glad to answer them!

Imagine airfares will drop dramatically into August as hurricane season gets into high swing (as it were). Keep watching.
I visited the Buc when we were on STX last year, it is beautiful, very classy, and I've never heard anyone say anything bad about it. Buck Island is a must.
I posted a lengthy trip report about our visit at:
http://caribtravelnews.com/c0700_03.htm#stcpeg
Much of the report is about the Carambola where we stayed, but there are several pages of other info about beaches, Buck Island, etc. If you have questions, post here.
Have a great time--STX is beautiful.

The Buccaneer is a superb resort, very well run. St. Croix isn't known for terrific beaches, but the three small beaches on the Buccaneer property are arguably the best on the island. The resort is very close to Buck Island, which is a must-see. The Buccaneer has its own golf course, and there's a beautiful course farther west on the island (Carambola).
Yes, September is hurricane season, so you never know. We spent a week there in September and only had one day of bad weather - sort of a violent storm that passed through quickly.
$550 from Chicago sounds pretty good. You may find something better if you keep checking the air travel websites, esp. if you can fly on a weekday.

After reading these posts Buccanneer sounds perfect for my family vacation.
two questions:
1.) do they have any larger rooms or one bedrooms?
2.) what is the best way to make reservations? are there any air/hotel packages? are internet bookings cheaper, etc>
thanks.

Carl: I have also been looking at the Buccaneer for a family vacation. If you haven't already done so, check out their web site at www.thebuccaneer.com. I think Classic Vacations have trips there, but I'm just at the beginning myself.
