Biras and St. John Dressing Issues

hi. my fiance and i leave soon for 12 days in the virgin islands (5 in St. John at the Harmony Studios and then 7 glorious days at Biras Creek). as we were beginning to pack, my fiance said he couldn't possibly need a sport coat. could you let me know if you agree? i know at Biras they require collared shirts, so we wont need a sport coat there. however, should we leave the island or go out high-end in St. John will one be necessary? Also, what exactly do they mean by collared shirts -- is a jersey tennis shirt (3 button with collar) ok or do they mean button up the front shirts with collars? If they mean the latter, are short sleeved ones (though I don't love the look) ok?

Thanks so much!

Absolutely no need of a jacket for men. A sport shirt with a collar is it regardless of the number of buttons -- tee shirts, no matter how expensive, are not qualified as collared shirts. He most likely needs pants at dinner which is an excellent idea if any mosquitoes are around. Shoes of some sort are required at dinner at better places. Particularly in the evening if it is a nice place you need some reasonable cover since most people are unattractive partly naked. Women get away with more nakedness than men. I don't know where a high end place in St. Johns is located compared to where you were. There is nothing better there than Biras Creek since the Rock Resorts left Caneel Bay. You will not find any problems in St. John particularly since it is off season and business in not that good. Keeping covered up in the evening is a good protection from flying things. This you might note and take a lot of repellent at least 18% deet. Short sleeves are ok but if you don't like the look let him know. It also keeps the mosquitoes away. Light weight cotton is what you both want.

Men at dinner will be wearing long pants and button or polo shirts. No shorts or sandals. St. John very casual, more so than Biras unless you visit Caneel which is about the same. There is a shop on the property and you can take one of the resorts boats to Bitter End which has shops.

Hope this helps.

Thom
