We are thinking of taking a one week trip to Bermuda in early September. Is this generally a good time to go? I am a little worried since it's the start of the hurricane season.

Also, when we visited the island a few years ago, we stayed at The Fairmont Southampton, which was great for the beach, but seemed a bit remote. Is there somewhere else we should consider that would combine a wonderful beach with a closer location to Hamilton?

There is a risk of hurricanes, but Bermuda is generally very lucky on that score. You might want to take a look at www.weather.bm for some idea about the history.

September is a gorgeous month to be there. The weather is mild,flowers are blooming, still very warm water and evenings requiring no more than a sweater. The crowds will have thinned a bit as well.

Most of the best beach hotels are located on the South shore in roughly the same stretch as the Fairmont. The ones closest to Hamilton are Coco Reef and Elbow Beach. Most people who stay at Coco wander over to Elbow's Beach. Another option might be Horizons which is located up the hill from Elbow. (I recently called them about the possibility of a stay in December and they told me they were reconsidering their business plan.) I also found Pompano pretty easy to manage, but it is farther out from Hamilton than the Fairmont. An attraction of the Fairmont is their private ferry service which should still be runnning in September. And of course the beach is lovely and right next door to Horseshoe Bay.

Enjoy your visit, it is another world.

The good thing about Bermuda with regard to hurricanes is that we're far enough north that the storms weaken by the time they reach us. I'd say get insurance and don't give it another thought. It's a great time of year to be here.
I'd agree with cmcfong - if you want to be close to town, look at staying at the Hamilton Princess and using the private ferry to get access to the Southampton Fairmont beach.
Just fyi, cmcfong, the rumor on Horizons is that sister property Coral Beach across the road is being taken over by some high-dollar brand that has it slated for major renovations, and the Horizons property is on the back burner while that deal goes through. What I know for certian is that the hospital has leased Horizons to provide housing for ex-pat staff.

thanks for the update on Horizons, txgirlinbda. I had lunch last trip at Splendido (I still dream about that lobster club and the prosecco...what a great meal) and took a room tour. I thought it would be perfect for a visit, so I was very disappointed when I talked to the manager a few weeks ago. Back years ago I used to stay at Waterloo House with my best friend and had beach privileges at Coral Beach. I would love to see it back on the list of possibles.
By the way, do you happen to know what's up on the Munro Beaches property? That's a gorgeous location!

If that's the property I am thinking of, someone has purchased it and is planning a small but very up-scale, old-style Bermuda cottage resort.
And can I just say how strange it is to walk out of Miles Market and see that big empty hole where Waterloo House was?? We were on the ferry the other day and saw the lot from the water - it's a much bigger property than it looks from the road!

We have been to Bermuda in the early part of September for our anniversary. Beautiful sunny weather. They actually were having a major hurricane in the Caribbean when we were there and it was not a problem in Bermuda, although the weather was maybe more humid becasue of it. A very charming, breath taking and beautiful place to visit!

txgirlinbda, we are probably talking about the same place.It was a small family owned cottage colony (definitely more Marley not like Cambridge Beaches) on the backside of Port Royal Golf Course not far from Pompano. I hate to see the moderate priced ocean front options so limited.

Every time I took the ferry last winter I had to look away when we passed Waterloo. It just made me want to cry. I loved it there.

Even though some of the changes make me a little blue, it is still heaven on earth. Lucky you to live there!
