Australia to Puerto Rico
Hi Folks,
A friend has invited us to join an 8 Dy Caribbean cruise on 6 Nov 2027, departing from Puerto Rico
and returning to Bridgetown Barbados. Need some help on best cities to fly in and out of when coming from Australia. Thanks heaps.

Right now one can only give you generalized info as to the "best" cities to connect in when flying from Australia since airlines won't even post schedules for November 2027 until around 330 days prior to your planned travel dates and even then schedules are subject to change. I did a quick check based on this year's time tables and found your itinerary (Australia to San Juan, PR and then from Barbados back to Australia) is going to be quite a trek. You don't say where in Australia you'll be flying from but assuming you originate and end in Sydney you are looking at 2 or 3 different flights with between 22 and 28 hours of flying and airport layover time to reach San Juan and at least 2 or 3 different flights and between 45 and 52 hours of flying and airport layover times from Barbados and Sydney. Note: There are some itineraries where overall travel time could be significantly more than the "minimum" mentioned earlier.
At this point I wouldn't worry too much about what cities/airports you'll be connecting through but instead I'd concentrate on which itineraries would give me the least overall travel times in the fare class (Economy, Premium Economy, Business or First) that fits your budget. Suffice to say the airfare is not going to be inexpensive regardless of which fare class you choose. Also, if possible, concentrate on itineraries where you stay on one airline or their partners as that will give you some protection in case you run into unexpected delays or flight cancelations since the airline will be responsible for getting you to your destination rather than selecting itineraries using multiple airlines on separate tickets where it becomes your responsibility to sort out any difficulties.
You begin some basic research by using website like Matrix its (https://matrix .itasoftware.com/search) or Google Flights (https://www.google.com/travel/flights) - use dates in late November or early December for this year to see what flight itineraries are currently available as they will probably be similar to what the airlines might have in November 2027. Another hint, consider contacting your cruise line as most have an "air travel" department that can help plan your flights. The avert here is they won't be able to give you definitive help until the airlines publish their November 2027 schedule which won't be until around December 2026 or January 2027.

Puerto Rico (San Juan) you would have many options if connecting through the US. The big 3 airlines with international alliances - AA, UA, and Delta all fly there from numerous US hubs. Flight schedules might not be set, but those routes you see today from major US hubs (east coast, or midwest), are likely to be there in 2yrs... Many other US airlines - SW, Frontier, Jet Blue, and others fly to San Juan.
Barbados is another story. those 3 major US airlines all serve Barbados, but fewer flights, from fewer hubs.
For both islands, something like Atlanta (Delta) or Miami (AA) may be a good option - but it depends on how you would get there from Austrailia...
NYC (JFK or Newark (various airlines)), Washington (UA Dulles) , Charlotte NC (AA hub) could also work.
For a quick glance on destinations & airports I find that wikipedia is a pretty good source.

Flight schedules aren't open yet but usually I would recommend Sydney - Houston direct (15 hours), Houston direct to PR (4 hours). There are so many regular direct flights from both Miami and Houston to PR but they are also direct hubs for Aus/NZ. Houston is a nice stop over too, pretty cheap to get a good hotel and some great food.
