Antigua Safety and Jolly Harbour

Hello all:

After a long hiatus my wife and I are planning yet another Caribbean trip, this time to Antigua.

Just want to post a question about crime rate in Antigua. The information that I gathered does not indicate one way or the other, so I would like some insight from everyone.

On a different note we are looking into a few apartment rentals in Jolly Harbour (which I think is a gated community). Are the beaches there nice?

Last - any good recommendations on 1) the best (we like seclusion) beaches on the island; 2) good watering holes; and 3) great local restaurants (street food ideas welcomed)!

Thanks - We hope to hear from you soon as we are leaving in a week!

Cheers,

I was in JHR in October 2008 for a week. Jolly Harbour was nice, the people were friendly. Never felt unsafe, except in St. John's. Maybe it was the time of year. We even rode on the local bus. We were not impressed with St. John's.
We Never made Eli's ECO tour, it was canceled due to bad weather, but did go on the Wadadli Catamaran... twice! The captain, Sheldon, was a great host, and the crew was FANTASTIC.The circumnavigation tour was great. What a picturesque spot for snorkeling, and about 3/4 of the way thru, we stopped in a cove to dive off the boat and swim! What a blast. These guys and gals are great and I highly recommend them . You have to make your own fun in life, but these folks made it easy.
We dined at Castaways in Jolly Harbour, which was very good. Great bunch of folks there too! Mellini's (? spelling) Italian restaurant was surprisingly good as well.
The beach at JH is beautiful. Just a few locals on the beach, but if you stay at the timeshare you can get beach chairs in leiu of renting for $10 per day.
BTW - The casino was closed too!
I hope this helps!

We visited Antigua in Nov 06 and Jan 07, a week each time. Stayed at Jolly Harbor Villas, nice two BR villas on little canals, for about the same price as a hotel room. Not AI, of course. Near the beach (beautiful, and not crowded), with access to a pool also, and nearby restaurants and a large modern grocery store. Crime is not much of a problem on Antigua except for petty theft, and that sort of thing. We rented a car both times, and drove all over the island with no problems except for the bad roads. We also used the busses and cabs once or twice. Never felt threatened. There are many beautiful beaches, one of my favorites being Half Moon Bay. There's lots to do on the island besides sitting on the beach. It has an interesting history, several museums, a zip line thing, and other attractions. Go to Shirley Heights on Sunday evening for the steel band concert, food and drink. Any cab will take you there. See English Harbor.
