Although I don't think I was critical of your views in my responses, if your initial post would have explained your feelings as your last post did, then I don't think anyone would have given you any flack. What bothered (and bothers me generally in describing destinations)are conclusions like "Puerto Rico is crowded and unsafe" and "I would never rent a car in Puerto Rico" with no explanation. Those types of statements are not helpful to anyone.

Anon - most of what I disagreed with was from John's post. The AI comment is important because it demonstrates a lack of knowledge about PR. I mean - you're telling Sandy that she should stay outside of San Juan but that if she does she'll probably be at an AI - that's just wrong.

That being said - Sandy - if you have any more questions about PR, I'll try to answer them.

Anguilla would be my choice. I've been to many carribbean Islands and anguilla has by far the most beautiful beaches. Its worth it just to stand up to your neck and see your toes. Im not one to go in the water unless im gonna have heat stroke but you can't keep me out of the water there, and st.Barts is'nt bad either. The resorts are first class, cusineart is unbelievable. The bathroom there is bigger than my kitchen. The people there are real layed back and very professional. Have fun where ever you go!

Some interesting and helpful comments from the prior posters. If you're leaning toward PR, the ESJ is easily one of the better choices. The lobby and grounds are hard to top . . . for the area. If you hope to eat well in the hotel, be prepared to pay a fortune and pray a lot. Better still, go elsewhere. Our overall impression: lots of sloppily dressed people wearing far too much cheap gold. Then, of course, there were the three fat guys smoking cigars in the hot tub. Pity. The setting deserves better. Although I haven't been there, I'd imagine Anguilla caters to a classier crowd. Just my observation, not a provocation of those who feel otherwise.

In fact when you sit on the beach on Vieques or any of the great spots in Puerto Rico you can think you are on St. Thomas or any of the other lovely islands. Don't judge an island or group of islands (Puerto Rico) by one area or one location. Each and every island has some good and some "bad" depending on where you go.

This has to be the craziest chain of replies that I've ever read! So, since all of you seem to enjoy giving commentary and have some great opinions about PR, here's my question: PR or Aruba. If we go to PR, we are looking at the Ritz Carlton or Westin Reio Resort. If we go to Aruba, not sure where to stay. Help!

All you people who want to go to caribbean island and then complain about the poverty make me sick! You can't have your cake and eat it too. The reason there is so much poverty on some of these islands is that most of you are so cheap when you visit. You penny pinch until Lincoln has tears in his eyes. You all know there isn't much industry on these islands but they have the clear water, clean sand, and blue skies and warm weather you all want. If you can't stand the living conditions, help or stay the he** home!
