where to go from NYC in Canada
Hi all,
I'm looking to go to NYC for a week or so on 28th April, I can extend my stay for a week or two to spend travelling around Canada.
I would like to go to Vancouver, but the distance and the cost is a turn off. So is there a good route to take, via coach/train/plane around NYC? There must be some tours to Niagra falls?
Any help appreciated,
Neil

When you say a tour to Niagara Falls, do you mean a guided bus tour from NYC? If so, I don't think you'll find any, except some from Chinatown. Niagara Falls is over 400 miles from NYC, and most people go there from Toronto.
I believe your best bet is to fly to Toronto, and then go to Niagara Falls by train/bus, or a rental car, or by some cheap casino buses. Toronto is a large city with lots to see, and you can also train, bus or fly to Ottawa, Montreal, or even Quebec City.

Thanks, Toronto sounds like a good bet. How long it take to get to Toronto by train or greyhound? Would you happen to know a ballpark figure for a flight?
Mainly I need to know how long to shedule for NYC -> Toronto (inc N. Falls) -> NYC, and how long Toronto -> Monteal would take, and how long I should stay in each place for?
For instance, is N. Falls a one day trip?
Thanks,
Neil

The train from New York to Toronto is more trouble than it is worth. You leave NYC in the morning, travel all day, and arrive in Toronto in the evening, having wasted a day of your vacation.
Air fares are all over the place. Depends on the day of travel, the airline, how far in advance you book, which airline you pick, and more.
For Toronto, there are several one-day round trip methods from Toronto to Niagra Falls and back. Renbting a car is a good method, and a bargain for two or more people travelling togehter. There are lots of escorted bus tours from Toronto for individuals. Various toru companies have various attractions on their list; winery tours, gamb;ling tours, natural attractions tours, etc.

Greyhound bus takes about 11 to 13 hours, usually with a switch in Buffafo and 8-10 stops. It's NOT a decent way to travel, let me tell you.
Like BAK says, airfare depends on all kinds of stuff - date of travel, days of travel, how much advance you're purchasing the ticket, etc. But don't expect the lowest fare to be under $200.
AMTRAK trains are for those who have a lot of time, who love travelling by train, who don't care when the train will get there, etc... In fact, delays may be preferred because that means more time on the train!

If you can fly to your Canadian location, I would definitely recommend Montreal/Quebec, especially if you haven't been there before. Quebec City is really pretty and interesting and Montreal has many of the sam big city attractions that Toronto would have. However, you would definitely need to fly and need at least a few days to take in the attractions, so if time is short, you may be better sticking with Toronto. One attraction to us about Quebec is the "French" atmosphere, but if you're closer to France than we are, so that may not be as interesting/important to you .
