Fern Resort was the site of many pleasant holidays for me and my family when my children were small. Pleasant atmosphere, lovely views of the Lake (Simcoe) and only 2 hours from Toronto if you have a yen for the bright lights. We went for a week every summer with the kids and once spent a big extended family Christmas. The place was then family owned, the atmosphere was very accomadating to kids with special hours for family dining an excellent kids programme and good down-home food, everything fresh. A tad unsophisticated maybe but if you needed a break there's Orillia only 10 mins away. Besides good old-fashioned fun has its place in the life of a young family and that what this place is all about. BTW this is all 10 years out of date so you will want to double-check.

Haven't been there myself, but every year about 6-8 families from my neighborhood go there for a long weekend. The keep going back, and keep inviting us and other neighbors, and telling us what a great time they have. activities to keep everyone happy. They like the different types of accomodations because everyone is happy (I guess different prices for smaller rooms to larger types of accomodations). the group is parents in the 30s -50s with kids from 3 - 16. I keep saying we're going to get there one year. We stayed at Tamwood @ Huntsville one year and loved it. Great food, it was too cold to really swim outdoors, but they had an indoor pool. Great couple running it too-very personaable. Enjoy whatever you do

Hi Nora:
Fern Resort is a very nice resort for a family with lots of things to do that you will enjoy. It isn't particularly sophisticated as the previous poster mentioned but it's nice.I live about 30 minutes away and used to spend a weekend here every winter, cross country skiing. They have upgraded the accommodations since then however. The food was always very good and they have some interesting local groups playing in the evenings to dance to. The scenery here is just ok. It's on Lake Couchiching (Yes I know...pronounced coo-che-ching) just past the narrows where this lake joins Lake Simcoe. The terrain is flat and you have not moved into the ruggedness of Muskoka at this point so not much in the way of the rocky shores people expect just a bit further north. The shore here is better for swimming for younger children however and the fishing can be excellent. (they hold bass and perch fishing derby's nearby yearly). You are just down the street from Rama which is a native reserve complete with huge casino and concert venue with good to excellent talent. 10 minutes away is the town of Orillia with some fairly typical central Ontario shopping. Nothing spectacular, but nice for "the tourists".
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Lynn
