My friend and I are heading out to the WCT on May 1st (the day it opens!) and just was wondering if anyone is doing it in May or has done it and can tell me how it was to go out when the trail first opens for the season?

I did part of the trail last summer in July and it was absolutely gorgeous but busy as heck! I went from North trail head to Tsusiat Falls and back out the North trail head.

I did the trail from north to south at the end of a dry August in 2012. Even then it was mud, more mud, slippery rocks and even more slippery roots, downed trees, broken ladders and boardwalks. You know, the usual stuff.

I suspect x2 in May, but maybe less crowded. Bring good rain gear and gaiters.

It's been a very, very snowy and wet winter on the coast. I'd definitely want to get up to date info on the trail conditions - it sounds like it could be very tricky on some parts of the trail early in the season - lots of run off and possibly more deadfall/damp than usual.

I'd probably contact Parks Canada to get the latest conditions. You'd certainly want to be prepared for very wet conditions and have supplies for extra days in case the trail is impassable or takes longer than you expect.

as kgsneds says it is very very wet right now. And more snow pack than normal.
Not to discourage you, just be prepared for lots of mud and as mentioned there may be parts of the trail that are washed out etc. Contacting parks canada is a great idea.

I should mention I live in Sooke, I've seen the snow and rain on this side of the trail this year, lol! It's been ridiculous... That is a good idea to go right to the source, though, thank you
