Vermont Quebec help
Ok --I am a Dad of 3 daughters (15,12,9)--my wife and I love to travel (we are in Alabama)...as each graduates the 6th grade we promise a great trip--3 years ago--San Fran and environs for 8 days--
This year for my 12 year old we are flying July 4th to Burlington Vermont (an area we are totally unfamiliar with)
July 4 We arrive at noon and I have a room at nice hotel in Burlington--anything open? Bove's? I have noted the big Burlington 4th events are the nite before (3rd)
July 5--I am thinking the Shelburne Museum. (and as a sop to my 9 year- later? the Vermont Teddy Bear place)
July 5 and 6 (no hotel plans but considering a route to Stowe via a stop at Ben And Jerry's, etc. I have not booked anyplace in Stowe or that area--??
July 7 (Monday) I think we are gonna drive north into Canada and I have a place reserved just over the Canadian border (Dunham)--at an apple orchard b and b (we have corresponded in French extensively thanks to babel ha)that I read about in New York Times-a link http://www.niddepoule.com/pages/frameset.html
July 8-11 I have reservations at the Delta Quebec in Quebec City-my girls have not done Europe and I thought they would get a thrill outta this--one is into French at school--crepes etc--also it appears to be the big Quebec Summer Festival days--(one day I'd like to see Montmercy Falls)
July 12 Friday--head back towards Burlington-no hurry---return flight is late on Saturday July 12 so just find a place to crash in US
This is such a new area for us--can anyone shed a light on or assist with the itinerary?
There is some driving but I like exploring and it is part of the experience!
Thanks af

Hi alan,
How fun to take a trip for each grad!!
Burlington proper is pretty small and I'm sure within the first couple of days your family will be itching for something different...I haven't been to Stowe but maybe someone else on the board can help with that. It's a good idea to include the Ben & Jerry's tour, I'm sure the kids will love that!
Once you get to Quebec city there is lots to see and do. This year is the 400th anniversary of Quebec so the city will be full of people and will be bustling. You can check out the government buildings, the plains of abraham, stroll the streets and grab a crepe, do some shopping etc etc. It's a cute, quaint city. Your daughters will be able to practice their french, but if you're stuck many people in hotels/restaurants etc speak some english.
If you change your mind and want to do less driving you can always visit Montreal which is just under 2hrs away from Burlington....It's a bigger city, and personally my pick if I had to choose between Qc city and Mtl. I'm a native though so maybe I'm biased!
Enjoy your trip!

The rolling countryside around Stowe, VT is very picturesque, but if your daughters are like most kids, they're likely to be immune to its charms! Stowe is popular winter and summer and has lots of nice hotels and motels, including the famous Von Trapp Family Lodge, founded by the family of Sound of Music fame. Even if you don't stay there, your family might want to try their restaurant, which features a number of Austrian specialties.

Burlington is a great small city, and Quebec City is truly amazing. In Burlington there is a great bike trail that starts at the waterfront downtown, and goes out on a long abandoned rail causeway into the middle of the lake - it's a real fun afternoon outing. The Localmotion bike center on the waterfront rents bikes, supplies fee maps, etc. Shelburne Museum can be overwhelming, there's so much to see. Another option is Shelburne Farm, which is a huge historic farm with lots to see and do in a beautiful setting. Stowe is a scenic and touristy little ski town. The whole area is quite picturesque, with lots of hiking, swimming, biking possibilities.
The family will love Quebec City, it truly looks and feels like France. If you run into a rainy day, check out the Museum of Civilization, a great hands on science museum.
Your itinerary looks great, and the driving in these parts is easy.
