Travel to Toronto by train or plane??
In Dec., I plan to travel to Toronto from Atlanta GA USA. I have two questions:
1. Is it better to fly to Toronto on Northwest or ride the train from Windsor?
2. Are there duty-free shops in the airports and or train stations? Where is the best place to buy duty-free items such as perfume, liquor, etc.?

I assume the answer to the last post is that you're flying on Northwest to Detroit. The decision as to train or plane is seems to essentially be - what's more important, price or convenience.

To take the train to TO you would at least have to collect your luggage and shlep it to the train station in Detroit or probably Windsor where you would catch a very pleasant Via Rail train. How much money you would save is probably not that much when compared to tacking Toronto onto the price of yor Atlanta-Detroit ticket.

However from the Toronto Airport to Downtown TO is quite expensive by Taxi, (over $30CAN), and is not inexpensive by Shuttle Bus if there's more than one of you. The train station is right Downtown so you'ld save a lot on transfer costs on the Toronto side which you might have spent on the Detroit side.

Of course there are duty free shops at the airports but I doubt if there are at the train stations. In TO there are 'Duty Free' stores for tourists in the city but I suspect that they are not as good buys as the airport Duty Frees but I could be wrong about that.

ANN- Consider flying to Buffalo and renting a car for your trip to Toronto... The drive is about 90 minutes and it would also give you an opportunity to visit the Falls along the way...

If you insist on a train trip, you can park the car in Niagara Falls and rail to Toronto (about 2 hrs). But taxi service in Toronto will cost about the same as overnight parking.

If you are driving, there are Duty Free shops at the bridges...

Ann, We are visting Toronto this weekend (Dec 1st). We are flying into Buffalo to swing by the Falls then driving to Toronto. My husband and I wanted to drive at our own leisure and enjoy all the sights. I've never been to this region before. Enjoy your trip.
