We have a Canadian trip planned for May. Via Rail has the North America Rail Pass which includes both Via Rail and Amtrak. The fare is something like $418 for 30 days.

Our trip: Dallas-Chicago-Seattle-Vancouver-Jasper-(side train trip to Prince Rupert)-Toronto-Ottawa-Montreal-Quebec City-Gaspe-back to Chicago and Dallas.

There also are train trips from Vancouver into Alberta run by private companies.

After being in Nova Scotia last year, we've decided to make annual trips to each of the provinces.

Depending on what your interests are, send me an e-mail for web sites.

Via Rail has several sightseeing runs. There is a special line that runs from BC to Alberta. It has panoramic cars (i.e. glass topped). I also think that it continues on toward Toronto, but you don't have to commit to that part. The part from BC to Alberta sounds wonderful, but I'm not sure I'd continue Travelling through the prairies might get boring after a few hours. There are also packages that incorporate the east coast including travel from Montreal to Halifax.

I have traveled across most of Canada twice by train from Vancouver to Calgary to Toronto.

Personally I would strongly consider flying from Calgary to Winnipeg. Vancouver to Calgary is spectacular. However the rest of the trip is not the greatest and the prairies are downright boring.

The Comptons:

I am not sure why you would want to take a side trip to Prince Rupert. Prince Rupert is certainly not a place that I would go to visit. There are so many choices that are much better.
