One of my partners has met with the Days Inn management regarding a projject, and was quite impressed with both the hotel and the management style.
It's a good location, too. Just make sure you are at the Carleton Street location.

The must do list in Niagara includes Maid of the Mist, Whirlpool JetBoats, and Cave of the Winds(US side)... with 8 in the Family there are other things that are age specific... if you give the ages, we can point you to additional attractions...

Toronto Life magazine has a restaurant guide you might find helpful: http://www.torontolife.com/guide/restaurants/ . Many excellent high-end restaurants as well as family places, plus Toronto is known for its multiculturalism - lots of ethnic possibilities. I would suggest considering Niagara on a weekday (will still be busy but probably a little less so than on a summer weekend) and save the Saturday for Toronto when there will be more happening and less "rush-hour" related traffic.
In Toronto, Harbourfront is popular summer weekends, usually some kind of event/festival going on there plus specialty shops at Queen's Quay Terminal and several restaurant patios overlooking the water. Ride up to the top of the nearby CN Tower. Royal Ontario Museum is very good. Nearby "Yorkville" is trendy high-end shopping district. Good Zoo, although far from downtown. Sounds like you won't have car, otherwise could consider the relatively short drive from Niagara Falls along the scenic Niagara Parkway to the charming historical town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Attractions along this way include Butterfly Conservatory, Whirlpool Aerial Car. Although with only one day, you can easily keep busy in the immediate area of the Falls. Marineland is another popular Falls attraction - Amusement Park in addition to the Show and Displays.

On the Canada side in Niagara are all of the popular chains as well as Planet Hollywood. Hard Rock, Wolfgang Puck, and a Canadian Steak Chain "The Keg". Because they are in the Tourist Trap area and in mid-summer, they will be very pricey... for fine dining, head to Niagara-on-the-Lake and any number of wineries or places like the Angel Inn Pub or Shaw Cafe in the village...
For Toronto, head to the Queen St W. area for any of the outdoor bistros or the Entertainment District for sandwiches and salads type food...
