Tofino/Uclolet Accomodation

We will be in the Tofino,Uclolet, Bamfield area in July for 3-4 days. Please suggest accomodations for a family of 3 adults. We want to whale watch, kayak, fish, and hike. Which one of Tofino, Uclolet would be the best to base for three nights?
Thanks, Linda

I haven't been to that area since August of 1993, but we stayed in beach-front cabins at the Ocean Village(Villa?) just a short drive south of Tofino. We, just like you plan to, stayed there for 3-4 days.

I believe there's more if you base yourself around Tofino, but the two towns really aren't that far of a drive from eachother.

On the highway between Tofino and Ucluelet are some of the most amazing parks I've ever seen, but they don't look like anything special from the roadside, until you park and actually start hiking down the trails. We bought a year-long parking pass for all the Pacific Rim parks, as it was cheaper than buying a seperate pass for each park. Most of the trails that weave in and out of the forests have been built on boardwalks, and that makes for a really unique experience. You truly feel like you're in the middle of a rainforest, miles and miles away from civilization. And there's a good reason for that too.

I've looked at www.vancouverisland.com and they have vast amounts of information on whale watching, fishing, kayaking, etc on anywhere in Vancouver Island. Hopefully this will lead you to the right place!

Linda, what's your budget? My favorite places to stay in Tofino are the Middle Beach Lodge and the Wickaninnish Inn. Both are quite expensive (the Wick more so than Middle Beach). The Wick is VERY upscale, while the Middle Beach is more relaxed and feels more like "Tofino" to me.

If you are on a tighter budget, you might try the Red Crow B&B. I'm pretty sure they have a room with an extra bed in it for a third person. Beautiful house and a wonderful hostess.

I much prefer Tofino to Ucluelet, personally.
