To Drive or Not To Drive in Toronto?
I will be in Toronto next and am still deciding which is best: Staying w/in the city and not renting car or staying at an already chosen B&B in Mississuaga and renting a car to get about. Any suggestions? I know it depends on my preference but I really don't mind one way or the other. TIA

We drove into the city, checked into our hotel, and left our car in the garage the entire time. To us, emerging into the city each day from our hotel was a fabulous experience! The metro goes nearly everywhere, once in a while supplemented by a bus or trolley ride. Actually, we preferred the buses and trolleys for the scenery along the way. I highly recommend Fodor's Citypack Toronto - this is NOT a plug - it really is a fabulous tour guide. And, the map included (which includes the bus and trolley routes) is one of the finest I've ever seen for anyplace, anywhere! If you are looking for economical accomodations in the city, do consider the Bond Place Hotel. Near Dundas Square, a block or two from Eaton Center (and the metro stop there). The rates were SO low that I booked alternate accomodations, just in case. But, the Bond Place was quite nice and just fine. Room was just a bit on the "compact" side - but, nothing to complain about. Nice (excellent) bathroom, pleasant decor (all new), meticulous housekeeping, friendly service. It's very well located, also. Wonderful local watering hole across the street, and inexpensive food in every direction (including the food court at Eaton Center). I would discourage you from renting a car - tough to park and the traffic is challenging... Another fine choice (if you're not driving in) would be the Victoria (you'd have to park in a public lot nearby).

Stay in the city and don't rent a car. Toronto is a very walkable city and the public transport, as Donna mentioned above, is great.

While it isn't crazy to get around Toronto in a car (as it is in NYC), you'll have to deal with heavy weekday traffic, steep parking charges (downtown) and driving downtown can be very frustrating as most intersections do not allow left turns.

I agree with skipping the car, unless you want to travel outside the city. Stay right downtown. The public transportation isn't quite like Paris', but it will get you around, and you can easily walk to most places anyway. I have driven there, and I agree with the comments about having few left turns - it can be confusing and time consuming if you miss turns. Also, while the traffic isn't generally too horrible, it can be quite heavy in the evenings.
