We are hoping to get to visit family this spring in New Brunswick and with a two year old flying is our best bet - right? Any recommendations about where we should look for good flights -where would be the best place to fly into - we are thinking of renting a car when we arrive - thoughts?

I have driven to New Brunswick almost every year of my life (probably 40 times). I have had every age of child in the car and have never had a problem with them and actually quite enjoy it especially the trip along the St Lawrence River from Quebec to Riviere Du Loup. If you fly you would probably get the best rate flying Westjet into Moncton. Fredericton, Saint John, St Andrews and Fundy Park are places I would recommend you visit.

Once you get to New Brunswick, will you ned a car?

And can you borrow one, or do you need to rent one?

Moncton is two long days by car from Toronto, or longer if you go the better way.

DEpending on the baby, and how much baby stuff you need to bring, and how long you get to stay in NB... a car might be a good idea. I've driven back and forth at least a dozen times.

A two year old generally does not care where he is, and I think the drive from Toronto to NB, via the Maine coast, is one of the great North American drives. I would much prefer driving,myself.

Coming back, along the St. Lawrence, isn't bad, either, as long as you make an effort to see thge river instead of sticking to the big highway.

I am with BAK-with very recent experience of this drive.

We have a home on the South Shore of NS and live in Toronto. We routinely "break" our 2-day drives to and from, in either Edmunston NB or Levis Quebec (and on via Montreal).

But if we want a slightly longer drive we like the US route-cross at Ganonoque, across route 3 from Watertown, throuth the Adirondacks to Lake Placid area, across the ferry to Burlington Vermont and on through New Hampshire, and Maine to Calais-St. Stephen. It is absolutley lovely to drive and not a crowded route. We did this with a baby, then toddler, (now university grad) for years.

Personally, I think the drive is half the fun and would not fly becasue of the hassle of car rental at the other end. Getting kids used to family drives in the car is a discipline worth sharing because it yields so much joy over the years.

I am sorry but I have to tell you that BAK must have made a stop overnight. Since there is 2 of you and a child you can drive in less time. A child will sleep just about anywhere, will yours? If so then I would drive it would be less expensive. When my husband and I make the drive from Toronto to P.E.I. I can make it in 19 hrs with breaks and that is just me driving. If you switch off you can do the same. One will rest while the other drives and your child sleeps. However it is your call this is just what I do. By the time you pay for your flight, rent a car and put gas into it what will it cost? When I make my drive it cost me for 2 wks about $550 rt. Now it should only cost you about $400 give or take depending on how much running around you do while you are there and how long you are there for. Also the type of car and what kind of milage you get. So even if you take two days to get there you have to make up your mind as to what is more important the cost or the time it takes to get there.

Where in NB are you going? That would really help in determing which airport to fly into. For planning a vacation to NB, you should check out the website for NB tourism...they have some really great day trip ideas....they had some driving vacation sample itineraries...really great I thought.
