Suggestions for a great Banff vacation
My husband and I are traveling to the Banff/LL area in midseptember. We will be there for 3 days / 4 nights and would like to make the most of our trip. What are the "MUST sees", things to do, and best places to eat. What is the weather like that time of year? We were considering white water rafting and horseback riding. Where should we go for that and will it be too cold? We like to stay on somewhat of a budget but are willing to splurge for things that are worth it. Any suggestions to help us have a fulfilling three days without waste would be greatly appreciated.

There are tons of things to do and see here; where to I start? (I live here so I do know what I am talking about.) (go to www.banfflakelouise.com)

I would not recommend "white water rafting" at this time of year as the water levels are low. I would however suggest a "float trip" with Kootenay River Runners on the Kootenay River. Very scenic. (rafttherockies.com)

Strongly suggest a wilderness horseback trip. (horseback.com)

Hikiing: suggest Sunshine meadows for a day hike as well as Larch Valley and Moraine Lake near Lake Louise. You need a bus ticket for Sunshine; Call White Mountain Tours. (403-678-4099)

Also suggest a helicopter tour or heli-hike with Alpine Helicopters in Canmore (15 minutes from Banff)

For eating: Melissa's, Guido's, Coyotes, The Banff Springs and the Rimrock.

For Accommodation: High end; The Rimrock and The Banff Springs
Middle: Douglas Fir Resort, Tunnel Mountain Chalets, or any of the Caribou Properties (bestofbanff.com)

Must See; Banff Gondola, shopping in Banff, johnston Canyon, Morraine Lake,

Enjoy!

Blessings

Stuart <><

another good restaurant in lake louise (nothing fancy, nice place for lunch) is called (i think) "the station". it is by the old train station. very good food. i'd pass on the white water rafting, unless you just want a float trip. the water will be low and cold. another high end restaurant that is suppose to be fabulous is at the buffalo mountain lodge in banff.

You are probably already in Canada but for others who are going to be in LL and area...
We were just in LL and ate at the Station. There are two restaurants - one is in renovated railway wagons and the other is in the old train station. We ate dinner in the latter and were quite pleased. The choices listed under "light fares" are enough for a meal. CAD 8.50 for scallops, and about CAD20-25 for a NY strip steak. About 20 minutes from LL in direction Field is the Cathedral Mountain Lodge. It has an excellent restaurant and the chalets look nice as well!
