the exchange rate on the Canadian dollar makes Canada a bargain for Americans, so you don't need to worry too much about price. Canada's a big country; do you want to ski in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta or British Columbia?

The real adventure for a family would be skiing at Mount Tremblant, north of Montreal, in a community where there's a gret mix of English and French language, habits, culture.

The best skiing is at whistler in British Columbia, and in the Banff and Lake Louise area of Alberta, near Calgary, but these destinations require a longer flight.
BAK

By far the best skiing for the beginner would be Jasper, although Kimberley is great as well. The one problem with Kimberley is the last little stretch is a bit of a challenge for the novice.
Mandy

If you are planning a ski trip in January, I would definitely recommend Jasper, Alberta. From Jan 13-20, they have "Jasper in January". All the hotels have reduced prices, and so does the ski hill (Marmot Basin - www.skimarmot.com), so it is a great bargain. Marmot is a great ski hill with a wide range of runs from beginner to expert.

For a family, I highly recommend staying at the Jasper Inn (www.jasperinn.com). You can get 1 and 2-bedroom units with kitchens and fireplaces for reasonable prices. I have stayed there many times and really enjoy it. There is also a heated indoor pool for the kids to splash around in during the evenings.

To get to Jasper, you would have to fly into Edmonton. From there, you could rent a car, take a bus or train to Jasper. It is a 4-hour drive, but I think that it is worth it - because Jasper is a beautiful and quaint little town in the mountains.

If you have extra time, you could also spend some time at the famous West Edmonton Mall before or after your time in Jasper.

Thanks everyone for the help. I know very little about the slopes in Canada and part of my decision will be made by the the cost of flying and where the deals are. I had some concern about snow in Jan. 2-7 but it sounds like there will be plenty of snow, again thanks for the help.
