Rv travel north from Banff
Around the second week in May '03 we will be heading to Alaska in a motorhome and one of our stops will be Banff and Lake Louise.
We would like to continue north to Jasper via the Icefields Parkway. What can we expect in terms of weather and are the Campgrounds open at that time of the year? Is there anything we should not miss while on that route?

It is a beautiful drive up the parkway. Your altitude is quite high and there will be snow on either side of the road. A few years ago we headed up that way in late June and an avalanche had closed the road for a day. Be sure to ask about road conditions at the park entrance. Many Campgrounds are likey to still be closed but I am pretty sure "The Whistlers" just outside of Jasper has all season sites. It is a very nice campground with big sites and you are still well in the wilderness. Be sure to bring winter coats!! Also stop at Athabaska Falls. The Colombia Icefield interpretive centre is worthwhile but the bus tour is a little pricey. Be careful on the glacier if you are walking. While you are in Jasper check out Maligne Canyon and take the gondola up Whistler Mountain (but dress for the dead of winter!!). Have fun

Did a quick search for you. Here are two that are open in the Banff/Lake Louise area. I've camped (in the tenting area) at Tunnel Mountain and it was alright. Lots of cut wood for fires. Have fun. For Jasper's, type in Jasper National Park on the web search. I couldn't tell their winter sites at quick glance.

2.4 km from Banff.
Situated close to Banff on Tunnel Mountain, within walking distance (local bus service) of downtown Banff. Services, such as food, laundry and a waterslide are close by. There is an unbelievable view of the valley, hoodoos, and the Banff Springs Golf course.
There are 322 full service sites in the Trailer Court, 189 power only sites in Village II, plus 622 non-serviced sites in Village I (4km from Banff).
Tunnel Mountain Village I - Open from May 17 - September 30, 2002 Fees

Tunnel Mountain Village II - Open all year Fees

Lake Louise Campground -

58 km west of Banff in the jewel of the Canadian Rockies.
Try the scenic route from Banff past Johnston Canyon the Bow Valley Parkway. Unfortunately the RV site at Tunnel Mountain is a paved parking lot. RVs are not allowed in the tenting site.

It is kind of like a Walmart parking lot with a killer view.

Still, if you are used to travelling by RV, you have probably become used to this.
