Places to stay in Halifax?

Seems like most people prefer to stay in Halifax near the Harbor -- not in Dartmouth. What do you think? I'm having a difficult time finding availability for a mid-July visit, at least for a room under $200 per night. Any recommendations?

Also try the Comfort Inn Bedford...nice locale but not directly in town...you have a car?

The Waverley Inn does not have any availability. We will have a car. We've never been to Halifax...I was hoping to find a place to stay that would be convenient to sites and restaurants and not make us dependent on the car.

Staying outside of the downtown area can work well. I stayed at the Bluenose Inn (Howard Johnson) on Bedford Hwy. In the morning, I drove to Pier 21 and parked the car for the day. It was $10 for the entire day. Then I took FRED (Free Rides Every Day) the Bus to all the sites. At the end of the day, I picked up the car and drove back to the hotel.

I found that I saved money even with the parking fee each day. Travel time was about 1/2 hour each way which didn't bother me at all.

We are staying in Halifax the beginning of July and found accommodation at the Cambridge Suites for $149.00 before taxes. We booked this through Travelocity, the rate includes breakfast as well as parking and the location is next to the Citadel, so most of what we want to see should be within walking distance.

We had to settle for Dartmouth several years ago and found the Holiday Inn there fine for the price--walking distance to the ferry pier and a pretty good restaurant. In fact, we enjoyed "commuting" across the harbor by ferry.

I called the Cambridge Suites and they had no availability either! The receptionist told me that the entire city is booked the weekend of July 17-20 because there is a KISS concert in town! They have plenty of rooms the following weekend so I'm going to do my trip in reverse! Thanks for the suggestions!

We wanted to stay right by the harbor in Halifax, and we found the prices at the hotels too high. I bid on priceline for a five-star hotel in Halifax and ended up with the Marriott Harborfront for $75 (US). I bid in early May for nights in mid-August.
