Nova Scotia, anyone?
My wife and I will be visiting NYC in April. From there, we'd like to visit one of her friends in Nova Scotia. My initial plans are to rent a car in NYC...drive to Bar Harbor Maine...and take a Ferry to a town near Halifax. The other option is to fly from JFK to Halifax. Any comments on either of these itineraries? Also, any comments/suggestions about Halifax in general? Any suggestions for lodging? Thanks for you help!

I think I would opt for the ferry.
The drive through northeastern Maine to Calais is featureless. There is the interesting Bay of Fundy National Park where you can see the effects of the high tides. But it is an all day affair to get from Bar Harbor to the Nova Scotia line with New Brunswick.
Halifax is interesting. I am not sure how the weather will be for outdoor activities. Still a little cool for the beach, but the coast line along the Minas Basin is interesting because of the tides. If you fly, you miss Acadia Park, but you would have more time in Nova Scotia.

Hi;
I'm not sure how much time you have but you may want to consider flying if you only have a few days. To drive from NYC to Bar Harbour is approximately 10-11 hours, then the ferry ride is just under 3 hours followed by another 2 hour car ride to the Halifax area. This is definitely quicker than driving through New Brunswick but if you only have a week or something then flying is the way to go.

Ray, I concur with the other posters concerning some of the transit times involved. Airfares to Halifax can be pricey, so you'll want to shop that carefully -- but it's a worthy destination to be sure. Check out of Newark, too. I'll shoot you a link to my travel notes on the area. Happy trails!

Don't know when in April you're traveling but in case you're still around....I hope your schedule allows you enough time to explore Cape Breton at the eastern end of Nova Scotia - it's glorious! We made your drive last year...and if I were to do it again (would love to go again!) I'd fly to Halifax. It's a loooong drive.
