Check the website:http://escarpment.org/
Click on the Niagara area for info. Unfortunately the guided hikes seem to stop at Labor day. You don't have to hike - you can just drive along the Niagara Parkway. There are walking paths along the parkway (paved). It's really lovely.
Take in all the sight that the Niagara Parks Commision has to offer - Maid of the mist, butterfly conservatory, school of horticulture, Scenic Tunnels, Spanish Aerocar etc. Lots of literature available at all the hotels. A cheap way to see the sights is to hop on the People Mover and take it from one end to the other. Also, about 1/2 drive is Niagara on the Lake - a pretty quaint town that offers horse and buggy rides and is full of trendy small stores. Another popular attraction is Marineland - $$ but a big hit with the kids.
The tourist area of Niagara Falls offers a full day of going through the museums and souvenier stores and just walking along the parkway adjacent the falls. Nightlife you may want to check out Yuk Yuks Comedy, Hard Rock Cafe, Planet Hollywood.
The weather in September should be warm during the day ie 70 or so, but during the evenings you will likely require a sweater - especially near the end of the month (light jacket even)

If you enjoy hiking ask for hiking paths along the gorge.
