Thanks, moolyn, for doing all of this! I'm really looking forward to it.
|
Thanks, moolyn.

A big thank you Moolyn!
Yes, I do believe we had decided that 6 or 6:30, the same as last year, would be a good time. It was good to see you on Saturday, Moolyn!!! |
Goodies for sure will be heading your way... I'm actually heading home to see my family that weekend so I'll be unable to make it. Would have liked to as I've never managed to visit Toronto before...but... I'm sure this year will be even better than last. Hope many can make it.
|
Katie,
Thats unfortunate that you won't be able to make it. It would have been nice to meet you. Just got back from a terrific 4 days in NYC. Posting a trip report on the US board soon. M. |
I know... would have liked to too as I still have yet to attend a GTG. Toronto seemed like it would be a good first time. Hope you have several first-timers there.
|
It's certainly my first time. We are planning to spend the weekend in SW Ontario.
Time away from our cottage in Renfrew County is painful but worth it, I figure. We will go to Stratford either Friday nt or Sunday nt to stay with old friends -- Another first: Grew up in Ontario and I have never been to Stratford! Preceding weekend we have a cottage-and-Ottawa-based family GTG: Ottawa, Edmonton, Guelph, NYC, Halifax and Washington DC folks all converging. Busy times, following my recent retirement. Must head back upstairs now, to polish silver for tomorrow night's dinner party for 12.... |
The Toronto GTG is teatured in the latest Fodor.com newsletter:

Hi moolyn! Glad you saw that... I hope to do a better job of getting the word out about the GTGs. I'd like to add a calendar here... I know Fodor's does not sponsor the events and their homegrown, but I want to give members more of a space to mention the GTGs they're planning--it's always too bad when someone posts "I wish I had known about this GTG, etc."
|
Katie, thanks for doing this to help get the word out. I'm so sorry that you won't be able to join us this year as the Toronto GTG last year was truly memorable. We would all love to meet you in person. Maybe next year!
Everyone, we already have a tentative booking for Saturday, August 9th at the Hot House Cafe for 6:00 and I'll send additional information next week by email to everyone who has notified us here, or by emailing me, that they are attending. We can always add extra names if people find out closer to the date that they can make it but please be sure to contact me in advance so I can inform the restaurant of the final number and make name tags. |
Hi all,
I'm more of a lurker here than a poster but the gtg sounds like fun. Where on the boards do you guys post regularly, that you all know each other? Thanks :) |
Curlgirl, welcome.
We'd love it if you would come to the GTG. To answer your question, we didn't all know each other at all til we had our first GTG last year. What board we visit really depends on where we like to visit. Many members are on the Europe board. SOme are on the US board. So it's really a mixture. I think most of us regularly check the Canada board to see what is going on and to see if we can help anyone. But Speaking for myself, I didn't really know anyone before last yea'rs GTG. Some of the names I had seen and to be honest some I didn't recognize at all. But the GTG changed all that. SO please do let us know if you decide to come. If travel interests you, I promise you will have a good time. |
Oh oh.
My 100-year old father broke his arm a week ago in an incident involving a shopping cart (and possibly some chicken), so I have to fly to Toronto and drive to Lake Simcoe on August 1 to take him to a fracture clinic in Newmarket. Then I have to go back up on August 17th to look after him while his host is on vacation. These will be back-to-back Halifax-Toronto trips that will fall on either side of the GTG on the 9th, so I am gradually reconciling myself to not being able to attend the GTG. Sigh. But parents come first. We will be having a 2009 GTG, right? Put me down for that. Anselm, with regret |
Oh AA, I was so looking forward to meeting you! :-(
Can you build a Toronto holiday in-between those two dates? I'm so sorry to hear about your dad (but you do have to admit it sounds like the beginning of a good joke, right?) Bring your dad to the GTG? |
Thanks, goddesstogo. I had been looking forward to meeting you, too, along with all the other new participants this year.
I'm smiling about the thought of bringing my dad to the GTG. He'd talk the ear off off anyone who would listen (railroad stories--I've heard every one of them a dozen times). It would all be rather one-sided, though, because he'd forget to turn up his hearing aid. Then he'd want to have a nap. I'm still struggling to reconcile myself to not attending, but Moolyn, if you read this, please take my name off the list. AA |
Anselm, I'm so sorry to hear about your father's injury. I hope he's doing ok. What a shame.
But I'm also very sorry to hear that you won't be able to make it to the GTG. You'll be missed. Tell your dad his timing was just a little off! Yes, of course, we'll have a 2009 GTG. We're on a roll now! Can't stop a good thing. Good luck with your dad. |
Anselm, I'm so sorry to hear about your dad's injury and hope you will follow goddesstogo's suggestion and try and build a Toronto holiday between those two dates.
Your dad would be most welcome at the GTG. The rest of us haven't heard all of his stories before! |
Hi, Just found out about this! My wife Dhun and I would really like to come. Are we too late to get on the list?
We live here in Toronto and use the forums all the time to help us plan our travels - last year Thailand, Cambodia and Laos and this year India. Jonathan |
Jon, you aren't too late and we'd love to have you and your wife join us on August 9th. We have a tentative booking at the Hot House Cafe but can easily modify our number. Contact me to get on the official list: [email protected]
|
Anselm: Bummer about the broken arm but lucky you, to have a father alive at 100 years of age! Neither of my parents lived past mid-70s.
Of course I quarreled with them mightily when young (and was frustrated because they always agreed about EVERYTHING). But I miss them now. Your presence was a major inducement for me to make a mid-summer trip to The Infernal Wen, AKA Toronto (OK, I know that name was coined for London, England in the 19th C.) But I guess we'll have to get by without you. Unless you can be prevailed upon to have an early- August Ontario holiday...... |
