Newfoundland is all one word, whcih is handy if you are looking for informtion using your computer.
And it is a big province, so be prepared for long drives if you want to see it all.
I think it is worthwhile to rent a car, and on my last few trips there, I've stayed, happiuly, at the Hotel Newfoundland.

July or August, when it is as hot as it gets (not very) and the sun is most likely to shine.
I was there once in April when there was a heat wave and kids were dressed in shorts and t-shirts, but that was an exception.
You can think of Newfoundland as Ireland-like, in the North Atlantic Ocean surrounded by winds and cold water. That tends to make many months grey and rainy.

If you want to see whales and icebergs, June is good and probably not as crowded as July-Aug., not that it would really be that crowded any time. Sept. should be fine too.
I hope you are staying two weeks or more because as has been said, it is a big province. I highly recommend seeing as much as possible. In the west, Gros Morne and the northern peninsula are wonderful, as is the Avalon Peninsula in the east. For accomodation recommendations, click on my name and look for my trip report.
Wherever you go in the province will be wonderful. The countryside is beautiful and the people are fantastic. Our trip in June was one of our best vacations ever.

Butting in here as I also am planning a trip to Newfoundland for end of June 2005.
Unfortunately I cannot fit in every little inlet / bay / peninsula! Any preferences?
I'll be arriving in the west (by ferry), going to Gros Morne, and up to L'anse aux Meadows, taking iceberg/whale watching boat tour up there, then across to St. John's area, & ferry back at that end.
On the way east, across to St. John's & down south to the ferry back - which little villages / inlets / lighthouses / scenic routes are best?

Syv!!! Hi!! Newfoundland is a great choice after your trip to Ireland this year. I do remember your posts from that trip, and hopefully I can help. I've had 2 wonderful trips to Newfoundland. First of all, will you have a car? and 2nd, how long will you have to cross to St.John's? Let's go from there?
How are the colours up your way this week?

Fall colours are at their peak & very brilliant/varied this year. Even better a couple hours north (North Bay / Algonquin areas).
I'll have only about ONE WEEK to go across.
I've been to Nfld before and went just about EVERYWHERE but cannot remember which little villages were which!!!
I'm taking a girlfriend this time who's never been east at all. We'll be doing a little bit of Bay of Fundy area, PEI, then to Nfld, then going down Halifax / Peggy's Cove / Yarmouth way to Cat Ferry, to NYC before returning home.
Whew!

Syv, These are some ideas...my 2 cents worth. I'm sure you'll remeber thema s you go along. If I were to take a friend, first, I'd be sure to do the boat tour at Western Brook Pond in Gros Morne. And then the rest of the day doing at least one hike in the Gros Morne Park.
Then heasd east on the Trans Canada. In my estimation, Twillingate is too far off the main road to be worthwhile with only 5 days.
So continue on Hwy 1 to Terra Nova Park. Just before there, you could turn off at the road to Eastport and Salvage. We did some great walks in this area and stayed at a great B&B.
Return to main road and drive through Terra Nova and turn up the Bonavista Peninsula. Go upf to CApe Bonavista and then down the other side to Trinity ( a must).
Back to Hwy1 again and carry on. We honestly didn't care for the next peninlusa wehre you will find Hearts Delight, Carbonear etc. I'd keep driving and perhaps go north of St John's to Pouch Cove and area.
If you have any time left, I'd spend it south of St.John's. Petty Harbour, then down to Bay Bulls and Witless Bay. Be sure to take the cruise to see the Puffins and whales and iceburgs.
These were some of my favourite places. I hope it helps. Oh and in St. John's , we stayed at the Roses B&B and loved it. We've stayed there 3 times. It's right near the Hotel Newfoundland and within walking distance of everything., including the hike up through the battery to Signal Hill.

Thanks for the reply. I'll look up these places you mention.
Only reason I thought of going "up north" of Gros Morne was because it sounds like you see MORE icebergs on that tour? I've already done the Witless Bay/puffin tour so was going to get something "different" in for myself. I found seeing whales just "on my own from shore" all along the journey was more exciting than on the boat tour when you are so busy trying to get a camera on it, that you only see them through the camera lens, & then your photo ends up just water or just a last "blip" of the tail! (ha, ha)
Also thought the history of L'anse aux Meadows kind of neat to show friend - but I agree you're probably right to skip that area.
If you've read any of my other trip details / reports, you know we "sleep in the car" ;-) -- but may take you up on that B&B for a night. Sounds good.

Hi Syv, Oh, no.no, I didn't mean not to go up north to LAnse Aux Meadow. I thought that was a 'given' on your proposed trip. I was just giving my ideas from Grose Morne east to St. John and felt that going off the road up to Twillingate was too far north off the main road, considering how much time you will have.
I know wha tyou mean about the tails in all the sea of water in the photos! Sometimes taking photos stops you from actually enjoying whatever it is you are photographing. I bgave up on my video camera for just that very reason.
I have never been up the west coast of Newfoundland, only to Gros Morne, but it looks great to go up to the top. But it looks like there is only one way back, the same road you took up, but great if you have the time.
I'm assuming the 5 days starts after that norhtern trip and is for crossing Newfoundland to St John's.
Good luck..
I know you travel on a budget....just a reminder....most car rentals in Newfoundand do NOT include unlimited milage and it sure adds up!

If you want city-life in your vacation, St. John's most certainly is the place to visit. However, if you want simple living, country, ocean, etc., maybe you should take a look at our website. When you visit us at the most northerly point in Newfoundland, your vacation will have meant something other than fast cars, tall buildings, strangers and a night sky of neon and street lights.

Also, you can even come away with your very own personalized certificate showing that you are a "Honourary Newfoundlander" after being "Screeched In." This means that you become one of us by taking part in our customs and traditions. Every night we have a hour, sometimes two and three hours, of live entertainment where we sit around the living room and kitchen and sing songs written by Wayne Bartlett - your host. Stories abound here and everyone gets that feeling of "belonging." No one is left out. Give us a call. Visit our website: http://www.capebauld.com.

Cape Bauld B&B - Thanks. I've put your website in my "favourites" for when the time gets closer.
Kodi - we'll be taking my car the whole way so no need for a rental.
That's the only bummer about going "up north" is that you have to take the same road back.
Thanks everyone for all the tips. I've printed this off.

Who mentioned "crowded" - never in Nfld.
St. John's is a wonderful spot to visit. If you want a great tour, hire a taxi to give you the local flavour and all of the must see places. The Newfoundlanders are the most friendly people you will ever meet! Enjoy your trip!
