just adding my 2 cents- we've been out a couple of times over the last few years

we did a whale watching tour out of St andrews and it was great. Didn't see any whales - saw some dolphins but it was foggy that day and we went in and out of fogbanks - really cool. We went to Hopewell rocks when the tide was in, then drove out to the lighthouse and came back when tide was out. Then we went down and walked along the bay floor. That's an absolutely awesome experience!

Lunenberg/Mahone Bay area is beautiful. There are also whale watching tours out of here. And depending on when you go sometimes the Blue Nose II is here and you can go on tours on it. Annapolis Royal has a candle lantern graveyard tour that we enjoyed so much we went back to do it a second time.

If you enjoy history then the musueum in Halifax with the titanic and halifax explosion, along with the 2 graveyards where some of the titanic victims are buried are interesting.
Citadel Hill is also good (canon goes off each day at noon).
We also did a ghost walk in Halifax which was interesting.

Have a good trip!

All replies are helpful, but I could use more! We wish to see Nova Scotia, but only have a total of 7 days to drive from Hartford CT and back (After flying to CT from Minnesota!).The alternative is to probably never see Nova Scotia. Sigh.

We're older. My husband is not fit following a stroke, so we'll mostly be driving and enjoying the scenery and the charming villages along the way. We don't have the funds to take the fancy NovaStar ferry, but could manage the St. Johns/Digby ferry. Any advice is welcomed. Any lower cost lodging suggestions welcomed. Thank you!

Oh…we'll be coming at the very beginning of October 2014, so weather advice is also welcomed!

Memorata - start your own thread, for sure! People won't so easily be inspired to give you the guidance you need on somebody else's thread which is 3 years old now.

Hartford to Halifax is 754 miles - 11.5 hours of driving.

(that's kind of... a lot... but you just... have to give it your all, for reasons to which you allude)

The best news is that there is plenty to see on the way...

Make Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick a prime target, and from there go toward Cape Breton, NS and specifically the Cabot Trail.

You could opt out of seeing Halifax if you had to, given time constraints, but at least give yourself a sense of Nova Scotia.

If you do end up in Digby, try to book a room in the Harbour View Inn. It is an outstanding place with a beautiful garden, an easy walk to the beach, a small bar and quality rooms at very reasonable prices. The breakfasts are also first class.
