Mordecai Richler

We'll be visiting Montreal during the last weekend of April. We have been great fans of Mordecai Richler and would like to find a bookstore that might have his books (in English)for sale. Also, if you could recommend anything else of interest relating to Mr. Richler, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Mike: Any bookstore in Montreal will sell his works. If you want a feel for some of his old neighbourhood haunts, walk around St. Urbain Street in the the East End of Montreal, although it's changed a lot since he set his novels in that area.

Visit his grave at Mount Royal Cemetary on Blvd Mt.Royal.His famous high school,Baron Bing High (now Jeuness Soleil Organization)is located on St.Urbain and Rachel in the Mile End area.He makes mention of Wolensky's Delicatessan on St.Viateur.Try the famous St.Viateur bagels when your on that street. You'll be walking in the heart of Richler's territory.Enjoy.

As a previous lister has mentioned, have lunch at Wilensky's, a fresh hot bagel at St Viateur's and also Montreal's best breakfast at Beauty's just up the street from the former Baron Byng high school at the corner of Mount Royal and St Urbain streets. All these places are in the heart of Richler territory and all were frequented by Richler himself.
Murray.

I went to and graduated from Baron Byng and remember when Jeuness Soleil began and was called Sun Youth in those days.

Before we moved away in '93 I took my kids on a tour of the area and we stopped at Wolensky's for a 'special'.

I also remember being out on Saturday nights and stopping at the St Viateur Bagel 'Factory' for fresh bagels. The fur coats were lined up waiting their turn at 11PM.

I may be back this summer for a friend's daughter's wedding.

Favorite restaurants are: BarB Barn on Guy St for the world's best long ribs, Schwartz's Deli on the Main (St Laurent) or Moe's on the West Island (by car only) or Snowdon Del on Decarie (far third choice) for Smoked Meat (kind of corn beef).

Have fun. Great city but it feels odd to see it described in tourist terms.

Visit Old Montreal (not called the Old Town) and the Old Port area (in Old Montreal) not called the Marina as in the movie. Go up Mount Royal for great views. Ride the Metro for a great, quiet ride.
