Lobster Season

Planning a 9 day visit to N.S., primarily on Cape Breton, in either late June or early July. I've heard that "lobster season" is over by July...what does this mean? Aren't lobster dinners served all summer, or does this simply mean that starting in July all lobsters are in tanks (rather than fresh caught)...is there a significant drop-off in flavor and texture? Will i be able to get my fill of good lobster in late June and early July? I sure hope so!

Lobster season vares from area to area in Atlantic Canada, but regardless, you'll find fresh, tasty lobster.

Out of season, lobsters are stored in lobster "pounds" that are often big cages set into the ocean, with trap doors on top. The lobster retailers fetch thelobsters from the pound to meet customer demand.

If you are seriously interested in lobsters, read The Lobster Chronicles book which is now on the best seller lists. The Lobster Chronicles, by Linda Greenlaw
... The Lobster Chronicles Life on a Very Small Island. By Linda Greenlaw. Memoir
July 2002 288 pages $22.95US/$32.95CAN ISBN: 0-7868-6677-2.

I'm part way through the book, and its a good mix of description of life on a small Maine island and the hows and whys and wherefores of lobster fishing. It's set in Maine, but that's close enough.

BAK

We visited NS from June 20th to July 4th this year and certainly had our fill of tasty lobsters! On Cape Breton be sure to visit Baddeck Lobster Suppers another place we enjoyed was the lobster pound at Halls Harbour on the Bay of Fundy, sitting on the deck enjoying a fresh lobster dinner, can't beat it!

Did you know that lobster used to be used in our region as fertilizer? Did you know that it was considered poor man food, and people would have to sneak it in thier house in shame?

Did you know that the lobster fishery is the sourse of huge feuds between native and non native fisherman in our area, even being violent at times?

Enjoy your lobster.

Lobster season in the Northumberland Strait area is over by the end of June. Once the water starts to get warmer, the lobster is not as good to eat. A lobster directly off a fishing boat and cooked within hours is definitely better, not comparison to those left in a tank. The crab season will be open in Cape Breton around mid July - Cheticamp is probably your best spot to try it out!
