Lion King in Toronto

we are planning a weekend trip to Toronto and would like to take our 2 children (ages 6 and 8) to see the Lion King. Someone told me that they hear that this play is not necessarily appropriate for children...that there are a lot of adult themes (rape, incest) that are played down in the animated version. I'm not sure how reliable this source is so I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who has seen it!

Thank You!

Bryn

Bryn - Ok...I'll bite...

This is Disney's Lion King... the one with the dancing puppets that sing... it is a celebration of Africa with giant elephants and giraffe guys and colorful scenes that families have enjoyed for the past ten years... the Tony award winning family play that has swept the world with its joyous puppets and singing for families the world over...

You may be thinking of Disney's Vagina Monologs... that may have an adult theme and some other puppets...

Don't worry... my kids saw it and have continued to sleep through the night...

Maybe they were referring to having to deal with death and betrayal from some close to them as the adult themes. Other than that this is pure Disney...nothing for you to worry about! I don't know about TO, but for NYC it opened in 1997 and it is still one of the hottest shows on...weekend, orchestra-level tix are basically sold out months in advance still. We planned our extended weekend trip to NYC just on this show...I can't wait! =)

Hi Bryn - the Lion King is a wonderful production suitable for children of all ages! We live in the Toronto area and have seen Lion King twice - once on Broadway and the second time here in Toronto and both times, the opening scene has brought tears to my eyes because it is just so unexpected in it's originality of costumes combined with the beautiful music.
At 6 and 8 your children will be entranced with the costumes. There is no rape or incest theme and the as already mentioned, the story line follows that of the Lion King animated movie.
Do try and book seats along the aisle way - your kids will be thrilled when the 'elephant' and other animals come down the aisle to the stage at the beginning of the show!

I am printing out this page so I can present it to my co worker...maybe she will refrain from calling Protective Servies on me!

Thanks again for the feedback...I am ordering tickets tomorrow!!!!!
