Thank you, RJames. I did do a web search as you suggested -admittedly not a thorough search, but several Fodorites agree with you; they book directly through the airline.
Thanks for reminding me of the baggage costs; I have not encountered this when flying to Europe or on my last time to Vancouver, but then I flew AC. At this point in time, AC does not charge for the first piece of luggage, whereas United and American do. So with more AC flights available, we will probably go with AC.

Irecommend. Thanks, too. I wish we did not need to rush out and buy tickets so quickly, but we are operating on several other people's time schedules. We are doing a home exchange, so we need to coordinate with another family who is not only coming to our home, but to another home as well, so there's a lot of careful planning involved!

annetti, I do not get why you have to buy your flights so soon just b/c you are doing a home exchange. You know you are going. They know you are going. Do you have firm dates? Pick the dates, then buy your flights. What am I missing here? You cld buy your tickets the day before you go!

I, too, prefer to book directly w/ the airline. Over the next few months, I wld watch Air Canada's website www.aircanada.com
If you see a seat sale...& you will.... grab it! Even if you only book one way. I sometimes do that. I will buy one way & just keep checking until I see a good fare for the other half if they are not both good when I book the first one. They go up & down so down panic if you don't buy one day & it goes up the next or even later that day. It will come back down. The buy.

What are your dates? Or, maybe you do not know!

OceanBreeze:I need at least one definite date. Arrival is not that important, but I need to leave Toronto on a specific date so neither one of us overlaps in our respective homes.

Can I be assured that two tickets will be available for the dates I need if I wait? I would prefer to wait since prices may go down. However, home exchangers like their exchange partners to buy tickets so all is confirmed on both ends. And the last few flights I've flown have been filled, no empty seats, so I'm not sure waiting is the best way to go. I might not get the seats on the day I need.

Thanks again!!

Did you know (I did not!) that it costs $25 each way to choose your seat in advance. If you want to avoid the charge, you need to wait until 24 hrs before you fly. I had no idea. ..

I see.

Yes, A/C charges for advanced seat selection. I never choose that option. I check-in online 24 hrs b/f departure & print our boarding passes. I have never had a problem. If I happen to be in a place such as PBI, which for some reason does not have online 24 check-in for YYZ, then I get somebody in YYZ, or somewhere in Ontario, to check me/us in 24 hours in advance & select my/our seat(s). Then I just print the BP when I get to PBI airport. I wld assume that LAX/YYZ has online 24 hour check-in/seat selection.

You seem to be stressing about this. Perhaps the security of knowing that you have your tickets outweighs your desire for a lower fare. To you, it may not be worth the hassle of continually checking for a "better deal". Sometimes that happens & it is perfectly understandable. If you can live w/ approx. $600 per person LAX/YYZ Return (it does not seem like much to me for such a long flight), then you shd probably go ahead & buy your tickets today. Then it's done & you can stop thinking about it ( and so can I...ha, ha!!)

Thanks, OceanBreeze1. You have been a great help.

I checked the AC website and found I had misread it regarding the seat selection. Apparently, the non-stop is a Tango Plus and is eligible for free seat selection or as they put it: "complimentary." I think the airlines have figured out like the banks about everything they can ask for an additional charge, but I imagine my imagination limited when compared to theirs and that they will find more ways to nickle and dime us. Anyway, thanks again. We will buy tickets tonight.

This thread has been immensely helpful and people's generosity in helping a complete stranger is pretty wonderful.

Hi, annetti!

Yes! It is Tango Plus ( I did not notice that). So, you are all set!

Please post back when you have everything settled.

It's been a pleasure!

Now....I am planning a trip to LAX & am wondering.....only kidding!

Tickets purchased. We went with AC, non-stop from LAX to YYZ. And nice surprise, advanced seating was "complimentary." But, no food on board for the 4 1/2 hr trip. I wonder if that means, no complimentary beverages. too.

Thanks again, everyone.

I wonder when all these changes on AC took place. The last time we flew AC was to Vancouver, summer 2008; I don't remember seat selection charges being an issue on any flights. And we were served sandwiches and beverages.
Things have changed!!
